The Pro Bono Music Video That Never Got Done. . .

So--I was looking through some "haven't been touched in a million years" file folders today and found this year-old first draft edit of a music video that was never completed. There are certain parts of the original I liked better than the completed edit. Oh well. It isn't perfect. It certainly isn't good. But, it was pro bono.

Here's the original:

And, the final version that I don't like so much:

Hey man ... there are some cool things goin on in there ... can I ask you a few questions?

- What are the transitions that you are using ... they look like some kind of stretch (are you in FCP)?

- Just after thet face wash, there is a wide shot with the two of them in a grassy area with a sign to the left ... what kind of effect are you using there (looks like some kind of diffusion)?

- Was the driving witht he stormy cluods real (or green screen / other) looked really cool.

Thanks for showing...

Cool. Thanks dude. The transition effect that never made the cut (band disliked it very much) was the Whip Pan plug-in from Digital Heaven.

Yeah, some kind of diffusion. I don't remember exactly. I had just discovered the Matt Sandstrom effects around that time, so it was probably either his or the one in Joe's Filters.

The storm was totally real. Crazy thing was we were running 1K's off a genny from the back of a truck when the storm hit, so we threw some garbage bags over the Arrlite's and me and my friends and my denim jacket got soaked big time.. made for some kind of cool settings, though.

Hope this helps!

I feel your pain Thisiswells! The same thing happened to a friend of mine (pywl) and me. We were doing this "pro-bono" that ended up costing us money and on top of that it never got finished... oh well!!! Your stuff looks excellent!! Their loss my friend, Ce la vié!

Cheers,

Gualbert

I am asumming that the shot of the girl driving the car was a green screen shot and it looks really good. I am a sucker for that car moving along a fake background. it is awsome

Nope, there was no green screen involved here. This was a day of real, cruddy wet weather.
I'm surprised to hear you guys think it looks contrived. I never thought of it that way...

Looks good. That interior car shot is interesting. I also thought it was greenscreened because it looked kind of fake. And I don't mean that in a bad way. It just had an unnatural feel about it, like it was lit in a studio. Odd that I had the same reaction to it.

dude, im not surprised the band didnt like the first edit.

you did no ego catering! its mainly concept. the band wanna see themselves rocking out!

:D

its good though awesome...

I really wanna know how to get the glow effect in premiere or aftereffects
*wonders off to technical to enquire*

There were some good elements there but overall I was confused by the storyline, and the fact that the pace of the video wasn't right for the music... really no pace at all ...kinda random. I really liked the last scene...very filmic looking..the magic hour?

Wells... Love it man.
I did notice though in the shot of the old chevy truck pulling into the driveway there is something seriously flagging the top left side of the shot. What's up with that?
Loved the edits, especially the whip pan transition. Maybe used a bit too many times though.
The band shots seemed a bit too dark but probably look better full screen as opposed to the tiny web image.

Hey Kevin!

Hey Kevin!

I don't really like the narrative either. Wasn't my script. Wasn't even my EDL.
I offered to shoot the video assuming this UT-Austin film student knew how to direct......

The last scene was shot at magic hour.. This was last summer, but I'd say around 7ish.
Had to do a lot of color correcting to that particular look though.

Glad you like it about as much as I do. (irony)

That is a medium-sized men's black sock. Wanna hear the explanation?
One excuse for taking on this project was to make a Marla35mm adapter back when
those were really cool. Had to use a black sock to guard against flare between the
ground glass and the camera. This was very lame, indeed. That shot is there
because the director didn't know/care either way and I was apathetic at that point.

I hear ya. The idea with that effect was to simulate a tracking movement from the
bedroom to the closet, which in real life are actually placed in the apartment like that.

Unfortunately, it didn't go over too well. Too gimmicky. Oh well.
It's not in the final cut.

We shot at midnight in the middle of nowhere with a trunkload of Arrilite 1K's,
Lowell this and that's, and some Videssence flo's with 2-Honda 5500W genny's...

......and it still looked awful and underlit.

Lesson learned?
Never volunteer to shoot a terrible script by yourself without any PA's.
