The Prestige

I thought is was very average, and without imagination. This surpised me, because the trailer looked strong. Easily Nolan's weakest film. Characters garnered no sympathy. The cast is strong, but Jackman should be on soap operas with his skills.

I disagree I loved this film every miute probli one of the strongest films and great films this year. I had a blast and cant wait to see it again. nolan score is like 5 and 1

Yeah, honestly? I think this is proabbly one of the best movies I've seen this year.

I loved the fighting between the two leads, I loved the scientific application...

It was pretty good, to me.

I did NOT like this film... it was way too complex for the simple storyline... on a positive note the acting was amazing... but I figured everything out an hour in and was just waiting for the ending.

It's been 6 years since Reqiuem for a Dream.

About time. Aronofsky is worse than QT.

Well, I can assure you "Requiem for a Dream" it ain't. I'm anxious to hear everyone's review after they see the film.

I'ts a solid film visually, but I expected much more from Aronofsky.

cool film.

++++ SPOILER ++++++++++++

but wsa hugh jackmans character trying to say that he has to die, night after night at the end?

basically recreating hi body for the next show as the ultimate sacrifice?

++++++++++ END OF SPOILER+++++++++++++

Right after this movie I felt bombarded with the ending and it's excessive use of flashbacks giving "fill in the blank" information. It wasn't until later in the night when I could let it all settle in where I realized how clever the script was and how they actually let you know a lot without letting you know too much. I still think it could have been a good fifteen minutes shorter. I was very surprised by Christian Bale and David Bowie performances, very good, and it was also great to see Andy Serkis as Tesla's assistant. The Production/Costume/Art design was very good.

So, in short it was good entertainment but could have been better... yes it wasn't another Following or Momento... but good non the less.

P.S.: My heart palpitates as I watch the trailer for the Fountain, I cannot wait.

I think jackman did killhimself everynight. it was a sacrifice in that he only died once to his true self and every new copy was not really him. or is it the otherway around?

Borden had a REAL twin yes? then how did he know about or even bothered mentioning TESLA to Angier?

All I read is the last two posts... I only wanted to pop in here to say that I really enjoyed this movie... but since we've already mentioned spoilers...

SPOILER ALERT!

Pa-Pa... Jackman's character was a coward. Both men had the benefit of the same machine but Borden was the better man because he siezed the opportunity for his act and committed no crime. He used ONE copy only. The story required Borden's character to be kind of hard to figure out... you weren't supposed to like him and you had good reason to hate him from the moment he tied the wrong knot. The beauty of the movie was in not confirming that Borden had made a copy of himself... it wasn't until Jackman started killing his copies that I figured out the story for both men. I had a lot of fun trying to guess the story ahead of time and I normally crack it in the first 10 minutes... but this one had me changing my mind until the last 15 or 20 minutes. I like that I felt so emotionally attached to Jackman's character... feeling the other guy was an ass... and then as the movie draws to a close you realize that Jackman is the cowardly monster and Borden is just an ordinary imperfect guy who happens to do magic.

I can't put the words in my head into this post, but I really enjoyed this movie...

O.K., SPOILER ALERT

I was expecting that too, Matt, and I could be wrong here, but (1) in the end, Jackman said, "you had a twin?" And (2) Borden was clueless as to how Jackman was accomplishing things--"How he could still be alive--I saw him die." Also, Jackman didn't expect Borden to be alive in the end. Maybe he assumed Borden would be killing his "twins" too, but then why expect Borden to fall for his "sting"? (Jackman did not appear that final time, so all thought he was dead.) I think Jackman believed he had the first machine of its kind.

Further, Tesla was experimenting, trying to create the transporter, and had no idea that it was producing copies--why would he not have known if Borden had another machine that made copies?

Wow, they sucked us in with this movie--Great time!

EDIT--I loved the ending--I wasn't sure how they were going to tie up the loose ends, but it cohered pretty well. A bit abrupt, true, but my disbelief was suspended.

I also loved how they handled the journal reading by the two men. There were three levels of flashback by two characters, but by Jackman's anagnorisis it was all understandable--all the threads snapped into place pretty well.

You know what... I guess you're right.

My bad... man now I have to see it again. At first I wanted to ask myself why the heck Borden would send him to Tesla... but I guess it makes sense that all Borden thought Tesla's machine was doing for him is a light show... and that when he said in his journal about Jackman being mislead that he really was being mislead... as if Borden implied that this machine did the magic but all he expected Jackman to do is waste years and a fortune thinking a light machine was going to be doing the magic.

The only thing that's still messing with my head is that Borden didn't react to the boxes of bodies... but I guess the dialog tied it up enough that it wouldn't be necessary. It's not like the very end was this total surprise... we all knew what was happening as soon as the cat was copied... so at that point the only mystery was how Borden was doing it... and to me the beauty of the story would really be best for Borden to have a twin that nobody knew about... because that supports the whole point that magic is zero once you know the secret.

Am I the only one that thinks there is a copy of Jackman still alive at the end of the movie? When they pan over in the last frame you see him floating in the water in the tank. Initially I thought it was a corpse, except it didn't look like a corpse at all, it looked totally fresh (and since the trial had already taken place, it would have been weeks since the last show, at least). Or was this simply a bad oversite by the makeup dept?

I don't think there is another copy of Jackman. I think he just looked well preserved--though dead with his eyes open. The effect was to make the corpse look human, and increase the audience's horror at what Jackson did. Somewhat similar in effect to the thousands of crates at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

[Oh, and also, Borden really did love his twin, and he was talking about his amazing someday-act from the beginning of his career.]

I think I will have to see it again too.

Oh my God dude you just gave me chills! I never put that together before... isn't it crazy to think that the giant warehouse in Raider's was actually full of Jackman copies?

Kubrick was a freakin' genius.
