apple+c to copy

I'm still trying to figure the whole delete thing out though.... I'm new to macs and LOVE IT! Grabbed the Dual G5

When I switched full time to Macs a few years ago, I never looked back. Since then my efficiency and creativity have increased dramitically. To think all those years I wasted using a PC.

I think the 2.7s run excellent. As long as you have a bunch of RAM, then you are good to go. Once they come out with the Dualcore processors, I'm sure they will run just as fast as the AMD athlons.

I've gone to the Apple site many times in the past few weeks building my ultimate Mac. Too bad it would cost me over $10,000.

Let any of us macheads know if you need anything like little tips & tricks & secrets, etc.

Man, I really like my PMG4. I bought it 2 years ago and it's still the best computer I have acess to. I've worked on a couple of G5s after that but they belong to a production company and are pretty beat... I just maxed up my RAM and got a second apple LCD, dirt cheap from smalldog (the old kind).

Things are running so smoothly, I can predict this mac will last me at least two more years (I expect to take at least another 18 months to get an HVX...). That makes it much more interesting for the price...

Most people are not aware that a G5 runs FCP the same if you have 2 megs of ram or 8. Frankly I find these speed things a bit absurd. In fact the entire computer industry made speed the catch phrase so they could keep selling you computers. Macs haven't fallen victim to that hence why they don't come out with new macs each year. So comparing the time it takes for an After Effects Render comparing a G5 to a Xenon3.4 and it takes 265 seconds for the mac vs 386 for the windows computer. Is that 2 minute difference the AMc has as an advantage going to kill anyone? I doubt it. Because a dual core Pentium can render in Photoshop 1.6 seconds faster than G5 going to ruin anyones day? I doubt it. Or that in Cinebench a G5 renders 701 frames in the same time a Dual processor Xenon renders 643 going to ruin a project? I doubt it.

Here's something interesting, watch for a Mac with four processors. Yep four! And then the windows computers will spend five years adding speed till it surpasses and them Apple will come out with something new. And why? So you keep buying new computers.

The whole ghz war is more a marketing tool than anything else. Not to say that performance isn't improved, but its usually in very small increments.

In part competition drives each company to highlight the small differences, but obsolences has been around for a while and will continue to be. The market relies on it. They bet on consumers buying things they don't need or being the latest model to look cool. Apple may just be the best at that.

There is culture behind Apple and Macs that makes for the fanatics Jarred mentioned above. It develops a loyalty that businesses rely on.

I won't deny I wish I had an excuse to spend muko bucks for a powermac G5, but my G4 does everything I need it to do for now. So I'm resisting the temptation.

I do think Apple made a huge upgrade with the G5 powermacs over the G4 models, though.

But as far as the Apple PC war is concerned for me the Apple OS is what drive me to Apple. I get so frustrated with the PC interface. It looks and feels ghetto to me (no offense to all you PC lovers, but...)

The Tiger upgrade is amazing as well.

****, if I had the money I'd get a mini, new powebook, and pinche nano just for the hell of it.

Jarred: What is this place?
NBCshooter: The refuge of the damned.
Kai: [gleeful] A place where we can work on our extra-credit
projects without fear of reprisal.
Pooh: Come! You must be tired from the switch. MattC! [claps]
Bring our friend a hard-boiled egg and some prune juice.
Kai: Finally, Jarred's one of us!
Everyone: Excelsior!

Hey Chris, i know how that feels.. I was somewhat even embarrassed to go into the store.

It will pass though. Just remember the CTRL and APPLE keys do the same thing.

You can actually set which keys do the CTR/APPLE thingy. The worst thing for me was when my computer at home (Athlon 64, love it) had gotten me used to Control, then the mac I was using at work (Dual G5) used the Apple key, then my screwed up eMac in my dorm room was using the Option key for some reason.

I'd just end up banging on the keyboard and having it do nothing. Good times.

By the way, Macs cost so much because of the software, not hardware. Remember, operating systems cost a ton to develop, and Microsoft sells XP for 300 bucks. Tiger is only 100 or so and Apple sells about 1/40th as many copies. How do they survive (besides releasing a gajillion new versions)? You pay for the software in the hardware that runs it. As one guy said about Motion after Apple released it "it's 300 dollars because we figure if you buy the hardware to run it, you shouldn't have to pay any more for the software."

How much I love a good Final Cut Pro set up (dual g5/external monitor/good quality deck) is scary, though. But my eMac is slower than a mac mini and runs FCP just fine. Everything but rendering times I can deal with.

I had a friend cut a feature on an G4 iMac.

After seeing that, I really didn't feel "the need" for the Powermac series.

My concerns about replaceable audio and video cards was void. I realized that the solution was software based.

Now I do all my work on an iMac too.

oh sorry. yeah no dual cores yet (wink wink).

It has been an interesting. It took me three hours to set up my email and i almost gave up cause I couldnt change any settings, until i found the little grey pill in the top right corner... that pops open a little flip out settings thing. very cool. I keep hitting control+c to copy something and something really funky happens but it doesnt copy. and My delete button doesnt work. Oh yeah and the eject button took a while too. But we are all good in the hood.

But.. far and above anything else so far, the Spotlight feature alone is worth the switch.

Haha I got my first Mac (dual G5 2,5) 3 months ago after using PCs for... well, whole my life (they've been around at home since I was 2). I almost haven't used a PC since then, you gotta admit OS X is just darn good. I used to laugh at people telling me this very thing, but you won't believe it, untill you try it - that goes for every naysayer here.
The eject button took me like 30 minutes to figure out :cheesy: The mail wasn't hard for me, but my dad (even bigger Mac hater than, say, Hudson or Pookie... untill he tried my G5) soon bought a Powerbook to replace his newer dead notebook and he had to find a way to move some 3000 messages and like 500 contacts from Outlook, now that was a task...
Well, anyway, I'm loving it :)
