The perfect HD on camera monitor for the HVX200?

.... The Panny was very unforgiving with noise (very much like my consumer HD telly). The Marshall deals with the image more like I'd expect a CRT would (not quite as good but still damn fine).....
Hey booth. congrats on acquiring the Marshall. The 17" panny is the LH-1700. I am desirous of both the Marshall and the LH-1700. Do you think the fact that the LH-1700 having more detail and revealing any noise issues would actually help, so that you could tweak the camera to try and remove it as best you can?

What is the best method for mounting a Marshall? I also want to easily flip it for my Brevis. Noga and/or shoe with tripod mount brackets >> Some of these? Zacuto has the mini mount, my preferred Noga mounting option, I am just trying to fathom the price. Any alternative suggestions guys?

EDIT: Anyone prefer to mount a Noga on the HVX handle, the screw provision above the eye viewfinder?

At the moment we're mounting it on the HVX with one of these on the HVX handle:

I would like to get an arm at some point though.

I do think that the Panny shows up noise more and it would be handy if you could fix the noise that it displays but we simply couldn't. We tried everything including stuff that we'd read on here and still couldn't get rid of the noise from the blacks. As the monitor had no flip, we then plugged it into a Sony HD CRT and the noise was much more pleasant.

After speaking with a lot of people over the past couple of years, who are much more experienced than I am, they all dislike LCD for its 'noise sharpening effect'.

I don't think the LCD's add noise but I do think they accentuate it. You can still see noise on the Marshall but it's a bit more like viewing noise on a CRT.

I went to a Panasonic even in Zurich and saw the on camera monitor BT-LH900AE. It's a 8.4" monitor with a resolution of 1024x768. Did anybody use this monitor or was at least able to test it? It's the same family like the LH1700. Seams to be an outstanding on camera monitor but probably 3 times the price of a Marshall (B&H price $4199.95).

Nobody knows the LH900?
Panasonic seems to be very successful in selling the LH1700 and LH2600. They won several cases with broadcasters against their competition. Main decision criterion: SPEED. In a studio environment it's key that live pictures are displayed without any delay.

But back to Marshall for a moment... Can I use the 7" OR the 8" to mount on the HVX. And to clarify, what is the exact model number of the marshall? (HVX)

The 7 inch model you want is Marshall V-R70P-HDA.

Booth, glad you are happy with it. I got mine off ebay and it arrived within a couple of days. Funny thing is I had a 7 inch Teletest monitor and was happy with it until I saw the Marshall. teletest is local to me and I have been there a few times. Spoke to Steve from teletest at Videoforum in February, and told him they needed to upgrade their screen to compete, but he said that the screens were expensive and cameraman were more than happy with the Teletest as it is. Yes, they have a very good name and are built to last, but I am sorry to say the Teletest went on Ebay the day after the Marshall arrived.

Thanks for the feedback booth, this is good info for me to keep in mind as a potential purchaser of the LH-1700.

That looks like a good monitor- but what about using one of the 17" LCD's like they are using on the set of 24? (There is a link to them around here somewhere.) If it is just for viewing by the director and not for focus, cc or the like, one of those $300 - $400 monitors could do the job ....

I don't think you want that monitor. it doesn't have a component input. (meaning R G B)
There are other threads of people being able to put this together with some adapters, but it gets pretty expensive and it looks awful. And I'm still not sure about how good the image is.
Good luck

The perfect HD on camera monitor for the HVX200?

As promised, here are screen shots and a few comments comparing the Marshall R-V70P-HDA 7" LCD to the Innovatek IN007VG "cheap" 7" LCD with VGA inputs. We're feeding the VGA inputs using a component to VGA adapter. The results were a mix of the expected, and with regard to resolution, the unexpected.

so it's 12 volts. so you'd use a separate battery system for field work?

If I look at those the comparisons then I see that the Marshall has underscan and the other one has not. Is that true?

It looks that way as the Marshall is showing more than the LCD screen. The Innovatek is a bit funky with V and H adjustments, and there's 7 dip switches on the VGA to component to VGA adapter...so plenty to fiddle with on the cheap setup. On the Marshall, there's nothing to tweak. I believe that both are showing the overscan, but the Innovotek is not perfectly adjusted.

Brian, not sure on your question, but both LCD monitors would require a 12V DC power source, and the rails mounted battery system we're working on outputs 12V DC.

How much of a difference does it make going component? Have you tried it with composite in/out?

Has anybody tried the SWIT monitor from Varizoom yet? It's a few hundred cheaper than the Marshall and comes in a kit with hood, case mounting bracket etc. for $1099. I also like their system of under-the-montor lithium-ion battery packs. Would be interesting to know how the picture compares to the Marshall. Doesn't have the outputs of the Marshall nor the 4 pin XLR power plug though. Do the Marshall component outputs give a feed-through of the input HD component signal?

Thanks,

Paul

Moggy, the Marshall does output/loop thru, though I read someone on this forum recently say they were having trouble to get the signal from the Marshall to a Panasonic LH-1700 monitor. Not sure if this is a general problem with the Marshall or a once off issue.
