The perfect HD on camera monitor for the HVX200?

Anyone Using a D4 Component Video D/A?

Anyone Using a D4 Component Video D/A?

We've got a Marshall Monitor that we're using with our HVX and looping the component out into a second, larger LCD monitor for client viewing. It seems like it might be less combersome to mount a small D4 Distribution Amp to the camera rig and run individual cables to each of the monitors rather than looping through the Marshall.

Anyone doing something like this?

If so, were did you find the D4 D/A?

If nobody is doing this, do you have any ideas as to where we might find a D4 Component D/A?

Thanks.

As the guy who started this monster thread I have an observation that I would like to share with you. We have used the Marshall and the on camera LCD using the focus assist, and in post we can see no difference in focus resolution between the two in 720/24pn on a 26" HD monitor. We stopped using the Marshall in most all shots because of this real world experience. For what it's worth if you use the focus assist you can get great shots in 720. Perhaps it will be a bigger issue if you plan to shoot in 1080.

I'm less concerned with focus than I am with color reproduction. So as of now does an LCD on camera monitor exists that can offer a fairly accurate idea of what the camera is actually recording?

david - i agree with your results - but you cannot effectively frame a moving shot with focus assist on. In addition the operation and puller cannot both effectively use the lcd

Yes there are limitations but my film is small and the camera operators run the cameras, no focus puller usually. I'm glad that I have the Marshall but we haven't needed it much, not many moving shots in the film and the camera operator has been able to handle them when they come up. We are using the fig rig with a VariZoom vz-rock-pzfi for most of our moving shots and the camera and Marshall in combination with the fig rig is quite a handful to operate. We plan the shots, do a walk through to let the operator see the various focus points using the camera LCD and so far it has worked well. So on a low budget film you can get away from needing an on board monitor if you plan your shots and understand the limitations you must work under, budget wise.

Marshall monitor and underscan

Marshall monitor and underscan

Dear All,

I am using M2, so I need a monitor. Then, I bought a cheap one (just about $70), but the image on it is cropped both sides a lot compared to the same image on HVX's LCD monitor, and, worse, both sides are not cropped evenly, so I just cannot use it.

Therefore, I think I need a more expensive monitor, maybe, Marshall, and I want to have your advices.

First of all, is there any location monitor (no more than 7"), any brand, with underscan?

Second, I would like to ask the fellow forum-mates who have Marshall about how accurate the Marshall monitor's framing is -- I know if it doesn't have underscan, we just really cannot tell. However, at least, you may be able to tell me how it looks compared to the HVX's LCD monitor.

Third, I know there are cheaper Marshall monitors, as cheap as $300. Besides its resolution and color accuracy, how is these cheaper Marshall monitors' framing accruacy. Anyone using one of these can share your experience with me?

For my application, I am not too concerned about the color accuracy on the location, but I would like to have a monitor that can help my framing.

Thank you very much.

By the way, I heard about that Panasonic does have a field monitor (not the 17" one, but a very tiny one) with a underscan switch. However, it costs about $7,000, even more expensive than HVX200. Anyone knows about it?
Thanks.

kings - that is the one - i have it and I can assure you it is full underscan - pixel for pixel - worth every penny IMHO

Sorry, whoever said the marshall V-R70P-HDA is full underscan is incorrect. I thought it was when I purchased.

Mine cuts off more than I would like at the top.
I have been trying on this forum , Nebtek and at Marshall to find out if mine is atypical. No one answered here, Nebtek didn't now and now I am talking to Marshall who should have gotten back to me last week.
Marshall says it is not full underscan.

My understanding at this point is that it is close but not perfect.

I would like to know whatyothers experience with the Marshall is. I would rather have it cut off on the bottom that the top since I am always judging headroom and mic room carefully. Don't know yet if its adjustable and whetehr it needs to go back to Marshall for that.

What is yours like?

c3kings,

I've used the Panasonic BT-LH900. It's really nice having the waveform built in. Not $4,900 nice, but nice.

We used it with the Sony F350s on our jib set-up for 1080p. Not a very bright monitor for an application like that, but it helped to have a little more resolution and the proper colorspace.

I think it is crucial about how much it is cropped, as well as if it is cropped evenly, particularly in terms of left and right propotion.
By the way, how much is your Marshall HD monitor cropped compared to the HVX's monitor? Is it better, the same, or even worse?
Anyone can share their experience in this ascept? Is there any other brands showing better underscan performance?
Thanks.

Thanks, e.
I have checked this monitor on B&H webpage, which doesn't mention about underscan. When you used it last time, did it have a underscan switch, like those CRT Sony monitors? Maybe, it is by default a full underscan monitor?
Thanks.

King,

All of Panasonic's DC monitors feature underscan. The 8.4 also features markers for every aspect ratio starting at 95% through true CinemaScope.

My understanding ( and i think i've tested this - is that the HVX on board monitors (both flip out and the eyepiece version are full underscan)

My Marshall only cuts off on the top as i recall, I think left, right & bottom were all fine , but i might be wrong about that.

I'm very interested in other Marshall owners experience.

So Leni,
If you are using a 35mm adapter and have to mount the monitor upsidedown, then the underscan problem would be occuring on the bottom rather than the top, righ?
I'm thinking of getting a marshall. and I have the Redrockmicro M2.

I was pleasantly suprised to see that Varizoom's s1080 now comes powered via the camera battery of your choice. It's nice for me since I have half a dozen JVC's laying around most of the time anyway. However, I was suprised to see it still gets little mention on dvxuser... does this unit have obvious shortcomings I haven't realized, or is it simply too new on the block to have many opinions about it yet?

edit- found good thread here.... http://dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=79670 basically answered my question. Cheers
