I just found out some AF101 have left Japan for France. It seems those are the lucky bastards that will for sure get their hands on these babys before Christmas :)

In Italy too!
The right Christmas gift!!!:dankk2:

Yes Filippo, it is confirmed: Germany, UK, Italy, France and some others european countries (I don't know the complete list) will receive the first batch of cameras in the second half of the next week: I have made space under the Christmas tree

:dankk2: Panasonic

Don't be too expecting: We had a AG-AF 101 "hands on" show just some hours ago... and - allegedly - for all of Germany for instance only 40 cameras will arrive around the 20th. At least that's what "they" told us. And to expect mine in the third week of January. And I pre-ordered the night Bloom had his cigar. I am devastated..... :-(

Apart from that: The show of Panasonic Germany was really great. They had guys from a Hamburg based company who produce - if I got that right - mostly high end commercials let shoot on their own likings a 2:30 clip. They consciously decided to do kind of a "simulation" of a high-end low-budget clip and really torture the camera and the codec.

They did let some guys ride their bmx-bikes in an old, extremely dark factory hall, snow on the windows in the ceiling, only a few small lighting units, brick walls, fast movements, everything shot on ASA 400, 800 and 1200 with cine v, including some rough dolly shots and lot of over cranking, everything recorded strictly on the cards.

Result on a really big screen: Devastatingly good. Practically no noise. No moire. No aliasing. They guy we talked to also did the grading and he kicked the codec around a bit because for three shots they had forgotten to properly white-balance and he said he had no real problem - if he wants better results from a camera, he would rent a RED or ALEXA. Hope they will have this clip in the web soon.

I retreat from a critical remark I made some time ago: Actually the camera also looks quite good. As we saw it is really nice to handle, all knobs & buttons seem to be at the right places, proper weight, everything really nifty (Thanks Jan!). He said that also the energy consumption of the cam was from his experience remarkably low. They had three batteries with them, shot the whole day and all three of them still had some juice after that.

Will have a lot of fun with this .... end of January...... that's the only down side, for me...

I have also heard that units are starting to trickle out, so some lucky folks should indeed have them long before the 27th. But I don't know how many are going where, obviously; I think 40 in Germany is probably about 5x as many HVX's arrived in America in the initial shipment though. :P

Would love to see that. And that totally lines up with our experience with "A Verse"... watching the helicopter shot on the big screen with millions of 3-foot-long blades of grass blowing in the wind, and seeing not one hint of any image problems, was really remarkable. And yes, when viewed on a proper system, no noise. Look at the "Verse" thread for Stephen and Luis' reactions when viewing the footage at the edit suite, it's quite similar.

I think the maddest I've ever seen Jan, was at IBC when we told her the camera was ugly. That didn't go over well at all, I'll tell you! :) But actually, it has cleaned up really nicely -- with the final design touches and the smoothing and the final finish, it really looks pretty darn good!

I don't think we ever used more than two batteries per camera for full-day shooting on Verse. Its power draw is indeed quite low. A fresh battery will report about 4 hours of continuous recording time.

I know and for this I have written 'the first batch'. There are only a few hundreds cameras for all Europe. Fortunately my dealer was one of the firsts in Europe to place the order so he has confirmed me I will receive my AF-101 at the end of the next week. The second batch is after january 10th
