The Peacemaker - a documentary

update about the project on the first post.

Looks like we have locked in a fiscal sponsor, which I have learned is key for docs.

Filmed at the World Bank in DC last week.

Interviewing famed poet Fanny Howe next week.

Interviewed terrorism expert Jessica Stern for the film. In an ironic twist, The Nicole Kidman character in the narrative film "The Peacemaker" was based on Jessica Stern.

kickstarter campaign added. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1688693416/the-peacemaker-a-documentary?ref=live

the purpose of the campaign is so we can go film in Northern Ireland

dvxuser Arrik filmed the footage coming up on the guy with the machine gun at 1:18. You will also see him holding an H4N on a windy hillside as we interview a NATO spokesman.

DP while we were in Kosovo filming was Sarah Levy. Sarah's narrative work has won the special jury prize at Sundance. She has shot numerous Docs and Narratives and also shoots for the show The Office, which she patiently answered hours of questions about from the rest of the crew.

Barry, thank you for your incredibly generous donation! It is a great help to the film and you have been a great help to me over the years.

best,
Jim

We are looking to engage the diaspora in the US (and possibly abroad) of the following communities:

Irish
Iraqi
Israeli/Jewish
Palestinian
South African
Greek
Turk
Albanian
Serbian

If you have any connections to these communities or know of an organization or way to engage one of these communities where you live, please let me know. Thanks!

That is broad.
Longshot = I'm Irish living in Uganda! I know how to contact the Irish & South African communities out here.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for responding, and not a longshot at all. The subject of my documentary, Padraig O'Malley, spent over a decade in South Africa. One of his achievements was bringing all sides of the Northern Irish conflict to South Africa to meet with Mandela. At the time the two sides were refusing to talk, 7 weeks later Sinn Fein declared a cease fire and a year later the Good Friday agreement was signed. Nelson Mandela has a section of his website dedicated to Padraig O'Malley http://www.nelsonmandela.org/omalley/.

There is a strong connection between the two communities because they have so much in common so we want to start engaging them. I guess the first way would be to show them in Uganda our kickstarter campaign http://kck.st/fRtNEK since this is as much audience building as funding. And if we are fortunate to exceed our goal, the extra funds will go to film in South Africa in the fall.

Is there a way I can contact them? Do you get to South Africa? what kind of work in film/video do you do?

best
Jim

over half way to our goal! learning a lot about crowd funding. if anyone has questions about docs or the project feel free to ask.

58% funded with 35 days left.

Any dvxusers in Belfast, Derry/Londonderry or Dublin?

other news: dvxuser Arrik will be joining The Peacemaker crew for the Northern Ireland filming. He was with us last year in Kosovo as well.

Brilliant actor, and all around good guy, John Savage has jumped onto The Peacemaker Kickstarter campaign and will sign a dvd of The Deer Hunter to you personally. It's all for a good cause so check it out!

Happy to report we are 88% funded with 50 incredibly generous backers. http://kck.st/fRtNEK

Prep continues for Northern Ireland and putting a team together. Talking to an actor I have a lot of respect for about joining up for an interesting side project. I can't announce the details just yet, but will hopefully soon.

this week we filmed Leymah Gbowee and Padraig O'Malley who spoke together in Boston. Leymah was the central character of the documentary Pray The Devil Back To Hell in which she was responsible for organizing a peace movement that brought an end to the second Liberian Civil War in 2003.
