The Paperboy -- 48 Hour Film Project DC 2005

We made this last weekend as part of the DC 48 Hour Film Project (http://www.48hourfilms.com). Our genre was Superhero.

These were the required elements for all the DC 48 Hour Films:
Character - R. Moellering, hypochondriac
Prop - wine bottle
Line of Dialogue - "It was like that when I got here."

This took us 51 hours to turn in (and it still isn't polished) so we're not an official 48 Hour Film, but we were a hit in our screening group.

Thanks for watching.

For most of the audio, my guy boomed a supercardioid shotgun mic into a DAT mixer/recorder. That was one of the reasons we were late -- we forgot a male to male XLR and had to capture/sync the DAT recording separately, instead of running the mixed audio onto miniDV while we shot.

I love the credits too; they looked awesome on the big screen.

Dang, I guess my quick reply didn't like to make it's appearance. I just wanted to say I did this for the Austin 48 Hour film project last year and had a blast. It's hard pumping out something good in 48 hours, but some people do it! (I didn't with my friend.) It's weird, because we actually entered into the National Film Project (the same as the 48 Hour Film project but you compete nationally) and ended up winning two awards! It figures we couldn't win locally, oh well. I hope you had a good time!

room tone kept going in and out which was distracting

Yeah, I noticed that too.

Anyway, this clip was so silly it was really, really funny. It was way better than most of what is on TV passing for entertainment. Because of the STD references and the one or two bits of profanity I won't be showing my kids this (ages, 16, 14, 12, 11, 9) - too bad, they'd love it. But apart from those elements, this was refreshingly clever, original, and most importantly VERY FUNNY!!! I'd like to see more from whomever came up with this.

Whoa you're from syracuse!

That's a well done film for a 48 project. Great little story with some funny moments. Only thing distracting was the sound issue mentioned already. Oh, and the lighting was done well except for a few overhead shots in the copier room.

Nice job!

Thanks for watching.

Yeah, the audio suffered the most because it was the last thing we did in post and we were racing the clock on no sleep -- we're still missing some sound fx and the ambient sound in the kitchen, but we're going to do a proper edit this weekend. When it screened, most of the audio clipping was covered by the audience laughing.

The copier stuff was the last stuff we shot. It was getting late so I went handheld and shot it like a porno.

Magicdavek, I think there's one curse word and it wasn't scripted -- I did my best to keep this clean, except for the cartoon violence and the STD lesson. I'd rate it as a pg-13.

Actually, I'm going to dump it in Final Cut Pro, take out the STD joke, bleep out the work b**ch and then I'll show it to them. I'm going to show it to my buddy at work in a few minutes.

Seriously, this was very clever real life humor (e.g., "the copier was like this when I got here") combined with very well done over the top stuff (e.g. the paper weapons at the end). Too often, the over the top type humor in TV and movies is really stupid. Yours was so well done that I was laughing out loud trying not to wake my wife who was fast asleep next to me as I was watching on my notebook.

Actually Liverpool, but two years ago moved 8 blocks to North Syracuse. I can see the North Medical Center from my front door.
Where are you from?

urhgl,

Where did the music come from? It really added a nice touch. Also, can you share a little more about your settings?

Dave

Settings were F6 default. We used a .5 wide angle for some of the shots in the kitchen. Lit with a couple of arri kits and a lowell kit.

The song during the slow-mo is by a local band called RPM (http://www.rpmband.com). I shot a music vid for them to the same song (http://www.sonicbids.com/epk/epk.asp?epk_id=10656).

The rest of the music was composed by a friend of mine; most of it was loops he already made. He gave me a CD with about ten tracks on it -- I could have used 40. We made the hallway song (bom bom bum bum) together with me on guitar and him on keys the week before.

Gabe...I'm surprised I didn't see this thread until now. Anyway, I co-directed, shot, and helped edit The Space Ninja Coup, the last film in our screening group, same night as you. After I went home with my family we made a firm decision that your film was tied for first place with the sockumentary as our favorite film of the evening. As someone else already mentioned, the one issue I had with it was the room tone. Otherwise, it was wonderful. Keep up the good work. Maybe we'll meet at next year's 48HFP.

I thought this was funny. I didn't know where it was going with the baby then bam. I liked the humor and the timing was great on most of the jokes. The only thing I have to complain about was the room tone being choppy. good job.

dudeguy37, I liked the sockumentary too . Congrats to you on making it to the "Best of" screening. I enjoyed your movie -- did you shoot that at HB Woodlawn? Was silent film the wildcard? I think I may have met some of your crew at the kick-off event.

We should have a cut with (more) proper audio up here in a day or two:

What's up Gabe-

Yeah, we opted for the wildcard along with 9 teams so they actually chose two wildcards genres; silent and buddy film. We shot it at our high school, in a classroom, the hallway and the theater. We're you your team's leader. If you were we probably were on stage together without even knowing. I was in a white sweatshirt if I remember right. As for the rest of the crew we were the big group of rowdy 16 and 17 year olds ;-) Good luck with the re-mixing of Paperboy. It'll only make the film better.

EDIT: Sorry Gabe, I just re read your post and realized you said kick off event. Though you wrote screening. If you did meet one of us it was either my friend Sarah or me. We're you sitting in the backrow at the Warehouse?

Peace,

-Harry
