The Panasonic GH3, What The Red Scarlet Should Have Been!

I was once a member of Scarletuser, and like many, I got out of there with the disappointment of a broken promise. Now it wasn't that they just let me and many others down, it was also their arrogance on top of their let down; the lie that their Scarlet Camera that was eventually produced was even close to what they promised. Now I recently found out that they have closed their site and are now only a read only forum. I'm not sure if I feel sorry for them or not, there were some great guys I got to meet and learn from. Hopefully Mr. Jannard has learned a valuable lesson. Again, it was not just their attempting to meet expectations, their arrogance in strong part is what drove me away! Anyway, it didn't take me long to realized that my GH1 (Hacked) was doing for me what I needed at the time and the GH2 would be even better. I am a happy camper and have no complaints about where Panasonic is going.

Now I'm not gonna s*%t on RED but, arrogance I believe is there real downfall. I am absolutely convinced that the upcoming GH3 will be a better camera than what the original 3K for 3K Scarlet could have been. In-light of the BlackMagic Cinema Camera (RAW), and monetary assets of Jim Jannard, how did RED fail? Perhaps they should have gotten the engineers from the BlackMagic Cinema Camera to produce their original Scarlet. I am extremely excited about the GH3 and believe it will be what the original Scarlet should have been and more!

The Panasonic GH3 with the "Panny Mojo", oh yeah!

RED make great cameras. Period. However, their management are terrible at public relations. Their philosophy was apparently all inclusive and yet they are by far the most elitist clique I have ever encountered. This attitude has managed to trickle down through the RedUser members and as a result given them an unfounded air of superiority. I mean, seriously, most of those guys on RU that are slating everyone who doesn't shoot on RED are also posting 15 times a day, so they surely can't be industry professionals... When would they shoot?

The GH2 is amazing for the money, but it doesn't hold up next to the Scarlet. Having said that, they are in two very different price categories. Pound for pound, GH2 wins hands down.

Oh, I heard some wild speculation the other day about RED being somehow involved in BMD. As I say, it was very will speculation :)

For the most part, you are correct. But with all due respect, I never compared the GH2 to the Scarlet (Now that I think about it, Frances Ford Coppola did! - "The SHOOT OUT" Part 3). My point was, I believe the GH3 will surpass the expectations of the original Scarlet. Yeah I know it won't be 3K, but the GH3 will be amazing! BTW, good to see you over here from the ScarletUser forum, I remember you! LOL! ;)

I'm sure the Gh3 will be a great addition if they really have improved the dynamic range to a substantial degree, but I don't know how on earth it could top the expectations of the original Scarlet 3k for $3k raw. We were expecting a raw camera with 13 stops of dynamic range and 120fps for great slow-mo. Even the BMC as wonderful as it is is still a bit behind on some of the specs the original scarlet promised.

True, but the original Scarlet 3k for 3k was just a promise! Its specs and promise never materialized in the final camera. Vaporware! I understand that 3k RAW could not be challenged by (AVCHD) Pro-Res, but as a tool for an independent filmmaker at its price point (We don't know yet) and if it delivers in dynamic Range and overcome a few other issue that plague Pseudo DSLRs, the GH3 could be the ultimate filmmaker's camera! Hell I'm almost completely satisfied with the GH2! ;)

BMCC, Digital Bolex, Kineraw, are all offering true raw solutions. I still loathe AVCHD as an acquisition format. Suitable for the most pedestrian video workflows, but not very flexible for the highest quality creative visual work.

I see where you are coming from with this point but you also have to realise how out of touch it could be taken. If you need the highest quality then you really should not be using a consumer stills camera for your cinema aquisition!

OK, after seeing the specs and results of the GH3, I was wrong, the GH3 is not superior to the original expectation of the Scarlet. Though I am not disappointed with the GH3, it does fall a bit short of my expectations. Got caught up in the hype but, with that said, it will be an great camera! The two items that I wish it would have had would have had was 4:2:2 and the add on XLR input!
