The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

You guys are silly, judging a camera
so we've been discussing a camera for almost a year that nobody had even tried, and as soon as a few people got one and we get to see footage we should stop? that if something would be silly.

/matt

how did you measure latitude? did you check the shape of the curve too as well as the highlight color fidelity? i think we need to see a subway short already, but just some beautiful stuff shot in a difficult lighting situation would do, maybe a sunny beach or a nighclub? or both?

yeah, the fact that you think the codec has anything to do with it reveals that you've no idea what i'm talking about. or actually i think you do, but you're lost in the same infinite loop as everyone else and it doesn't seem like i can break you out of it no matter how many times i explain that i know and agree about the technical quality of the image.

/matt

Indeed, no technical testing. As far as my eyes see there is no difference. They roll off the same in highlights, they look the same in lowlight (after having to TRICK the D90 into getting to where the damned GH-1 could go with a few button clicks), everything is similar in that respect.

And I'm not talking SPECIFICALLY about the codec. I said even in Motion JPEG the image still looks better compared to the D90's 720 image.

It has JACK to do with the Codec and everything to do with throwing this footage up on a large screen, just messing around, and seeing that it looked like an EX-1 with interchangeable lenses to me. Where the D90 looks like a DVX with an SGPro 35mm Adapter.

Note: there are several people that still prefer the SGPro over alternatives because they think it feels more filmlike aka it's soft to death. Cool with me.

But please, reserve your comments on image quality when the camera's life has extended into US territory and some more shooters get their hands on it. Right now you're judging VERY prematurely and calling to the stand "ideas" that the D90 performs better here, there or inside the Batmobile.

It isn't true, we just haven't gotten around to real narrative or music video work yet.

And Mattias, your long-standing history of stirring the pot will not bleed into this thread.

seeing that it looked like an EX-1
that's what i was afraid of. ;-)
calling to the stand "ideas" that the D90 performs better
but i'm not. jesus christ it's getting hot in here.

yeah, let's keep it boring so nobody gets upset. that could wake some creative energy within people that the wedding and coporate video customers don't want. :-)

You guys are silly, judging a camera that only four (4) people on these boards have versus one that's been out for a year that people could learn all the tricks and nitpicks too.

Plain out silly.

Hence the reason why I haven't posted a single thing until I know it in and out. Aside from the MJPEG stuff, which was a request just to see how it held up and the grain pattern.

Shouldn't even have posted THAT though.

Next time quote my ENTIRE sentence, not what you need out of it to play tea party with.

Again, keep your pot stirring in the D90 forum.

Plus, I don't understand matt concern about the look (colors ?), which is so easy to tweak in post...
Take the same shot with a D90 and a GH1, it's just one click in photoshop to make the GH1 color look exactly the same as D90.
What is important is what you can't tweak out of the camera: DOF, sharpness, compression.

So - I agree that most of the footage looks more like video than what I see from D90 and 5D. That being said, I think that the look of the image is just what Panasonic does to images. I personally hate what the HVX200 does straight out of the camera color-wise. I have always felt that it was too saturated and "not filmic" as many people seem to want to say.

At the same time, I have worked with a ton of great HVX footage, and if the in camera control is anywhere near what Kholi has said it is then it's an incredible camera.

Fact of the matter is the best footage so far has looked just like Kholi said, EX-1/3 with an adapter. And we get all of this for $1500. Pretty damn sweet.

To put it in perspective. Because I'm incredibly confident that there will be a firmware update to the 5D, I considered purchasing one. I changed my mind when I realized that purchasing this camera with FD primes, I could have a camera with a prime set for less than the price of the 5D body. That's crazy.

I understand what he sees in the D90 but this is derived from a well thought out shot list and lighting scheme
yet all shot documentary style with three people behind the camera using absolutely no light but what was available at the improvised (no scouting) locations. :-)

Ryan ALL excellent points. And I am RIGHT with you when you say the HVX was TOO over saturated. That's one thing I ALWAYS hated about the Panasonic line-up, the over saturation! Yuck.

Dialing it down on the custom setting is very pleasnat, however, and seriously, just wait until you see something serious done with it @ 720.

I am jealous of 5D owners still because, in all rigged honesty, it still has the better 1080 image. It's resolving a lot, the lowlight is better, it's just an awesome image @ 2500.00 for the body.

The D90 doesn't get anywhere near the 5D to me, but the GH-1 is damned close.

It just takes seeing the 720 to realize it. Gimme some time, man. There's some stuff I really have to figure out about this thing but I'm trying really hard to organize a proper test over here.

I could post up flowers and trees, but that's the issue as it is: aside from Hunter's footage of his daughter (the most awesome footage I've seen so far) there hasn't really been any stellar footage out there.

Give it some time.

Hmm...I think he was maybe saying it looked liked an EX-1 with interchangeable lens ability instead of one with a 35mm adapter. There would be a difference in quality between these two scenarios I think. But otherwise...I do get your points.

it isn't. i grade footage from various cameras every week and it's amazing how much different cameras retain their own characteristics even after heavy grading. what's your experience in grading except one button photoshopping? maybe if you had 10 years of experience as a dp and had directed a feature that was shot on a d90 you would understand what i'm talking about.

kholi, you may think i'm trying to stir the pot, but at least i'm always on topic, while you always start talking about some stupid formalia like quoting or whatever. what's up with that? in my opinion that's how you piss people off, as opposed to making people discuss fromt he heart.

and that's exactly the kind of difference i'm *not* talking about. how on earth could anyone have missed that?

C'mon man. You're not all that and a bag of chips. Just because you are experienced in your field doesn't mean you are any good.

Yeah, that's what I meant. It's like of the EX-1/EX-3 had a larger sensor and you could use whatever glass you wanted on it.

That's what it reminds me of. And it totally fills the void that I've had for a long time since the EX-1 came out. I desperately wanted to buy one but I could NOT justify the 6.5K - 7K expense because I knew that Panasonic still reigned supreme, and my HPX170 would ROI while the EX-1 would just be the fun cam.

Fun for 7K? Nah.

But the GH-1 is like a little EX-1/HPX300 man. It rocks @ 1500.00.

Warned in sticky.

Warned in thread.

Locked.

Senior members - do your best ignore the pot stirring and report it please, though I know it can be hard.

I'm enjoying this thread / looking forward to playing with one of these cameras. Please don't spoil my fun / fun for others :)

Unlocked. Play nice please.

Alright, after having done a 720/60P to 24 semi-test, I'm pretty settled on this thought:

The GH-1, as it stands-- unless the camera is locked @ 17mbps in 1080/24-- is a 720P camera. Just like the HVX200 was/is. In 720/60P I have beat this camera to hell and the compression is very stout, robust and almost laughably inappropriate for a camera that costs this much and gives so much in return.

Not only that, but dropping 720/60P in a ProRes 23.98 timeline yielded results either spot on with 24P or so close that I couldn't tell the difference with two types of moving footage. I was even tipped to turn Frame Blending off after showing some footage and it looked that much closer.

With the headache that is pulldown and the way the compression breaks up if you budge the camera in 1080/24P, with 720/60P allowing you to do what you will, and the option to overcrank if you want, being able to drop it into a timeline and rip 24P from it and above all the QUALITY?

Unless Panasonic addresses it with Firmware updates (which I feel positive about, anyway) I will shoot everything in 720/60P then UpRez if 1080 is ever required.

My final testing period's gonna be shutterspeeds in 720/60P, and I'm officialy done putting the camera through the ringer.

Still coordinating an actual shoot, just bare with. It'll happen soon.

Aren't you a bit rude on 1080@17mbps ?
While I agree it breaks on fast action, it might work pretty well with normal action (ex: walking steadicam). So you could shot most of the scenes 1080p24, and switch to 720p60 if there is some fast action to deal with.

Very interesttting. At what shutter speed were you testing? I'm guessing NOT 1/50th, right? 1/120th?
