The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

So Kholi -- does your camera do 1080/25p? Is it switchable?

If so, I'd be very interested in seeing some footage shot both ways, to see if the aliasing is influenced in any way by the pulldown system.

Actually, another thing to explore would be that 25p should be able to reconstitute into better chroma sampling, because 24p (spreading the frames across fields) will be using the less-efficient interlaced chroma sampling, but 25p... might be cleaner.

Just wondering.

can't find any Pal / Ntsc switch at all. Hunter? I don't think it's switchable, though.

I thought it was supposed to be.

As far as I know it is not switchable unless there is a hidden menu. Been through all of them and mine is def 25p although my manual is a US manual and it says it's 24p!

I spoke to my guy at Panny UK and he confirmed my cam is 25p only (and of course 50p)

philip, I can provide you a (temp) ftp to upload some raw 25p footage, if that's ok to you ? (see PM)

I read on some website that there are button combos for getting into the service menus on lumix series cameras. It only talked about the point n shoot cameras, though I would love to find out that button combo for the GH1.

If I had a US camera I'd be jamming buttons left and right to hit service menus. LoL. Too risky with a .JP Camera, though.

Anybody got a clue how to get Final Cut Pro Log & Transfer to recognize the MTS files? I'm up to date on everything. I import RED and P2 all of the time.

Thanks.

Dummy Folder won't work without the rest of the files. =T He had to actually just shoot exactly what he wanted to show and upload the Private in a Zip.

That's what I've been doing. Otherwise it won't work right.

Thanks for the attempt to explain, Kholi. I'm afraid I do not know the definition of a "Private", and I deal with other kinds of card based movie files. I think I'll just skip it. I was going to experiment with pull down removal in Cinema Tools vs. Compressor and report back here, but this is becoming a bigger hassle than anticipated. Maybe next time.

Thanks.

It needs the complete file thats generated by the camera- The "Private" FOLDER. It has other metadata besides just the video and sound that helps FCP recognize and transfer.

Its a two step process if you want pulldown removal for true 24p and people have been doing it with other AVCHD cams for a while now. Log and transfer to AIC or Prores then u take the footage to compressor to remove pulldown. You get ProRES at 23.98.

the compression is UGLY

the compression is UGLY

I downloaded the mts files and saw them: the compression is UGLY!!! lots of freezing and banding in the mountains... artifacts in the buildings...

Thanks Mico,

I knew of that workflow and I wanted to compare the speed of Cinema Tools to Compressor for removing pulldown. But it looks like thats not possible. I'll listen to reports from the Windows PC guys who don't need the full package.

Are those supposed to be 24p or 30p? Trying to convert them with VoltaicHD and it says all those clips are 29.97 fps. Excuse my ignorance. I am used to PAL. Just trying to find out if VoltaicHD works the way it's supposed to.

thanks for the raw files!

It seems that in the hair of the cat, between the eyes, do appears some weird effect

Norbert: the 1080 files are 24p in 29.976 fps stream with pulldown and the 720 files are 59.94 fps

Don't buy the D5000. It has all of the same problems as the D90, which is nowhere near the GH1, plus it's a lesser camera than the D90. The only advantage that I can see is the articulating LCD. So don't buy it, unless that's all that you can afford. Even then, don't buy it; save up more money over the next month. I don't think that anyone here can argue that the D90/D5000 is significantly superior to the GH1 in any way other than price and current availability.

I'm not recommending anyone buy a D5000, but:

FYI: Nikon tech support told me that the D5000's HDMI port outputs live "720p24 HD" video full-time, even when the cam is in record mode. I haven't seen this video myself so I have no idea if this is true or how good/bad it looks.

But allegedly the D5000 can output _something_ while it's in record mode, unlike our beloved GH1.

If the D5000 outputs an actual LIVE 720/24P and not some garbled crap I'd be VERY surprised.

the d90 did the same thing, but it's not full uncompressed hdmi...just a preview. and the 720p included the menu, red focus square in the middle and whatever else was on the lcd screen.

Well, I've read through the thread and I'm still confused. Is this Panasonics' answer to the Scarlet?

It looks like a great little camera, but if you want to shoot HD, why not just shoot on an HPX or HVX?
