The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

Now this is a scenario where a touch screen would be awesome - tap the desired focus area - as a bonus, double tap to slow focus at programed rate, single tap to snap focus. Yeah... GH3! Ok, back to reality.

Calm down DiscoD, you just made it to the "cool kids table" equivalent of these forums, try to look cool

Hell, the damned thing has a setting to track ANIMALS, man.

I was aware of a "focus tracking" mode for stills, where it would track and object moving thru the scene, but I thought that mode wasn't available in video mode.

Are you saying the facial tracking works on animals? Or does the tracking of general objects work in video? Or is there a special animal mode that I hadn't ever heard of?

Very curious to hear about this!

Facial Recognition certainly works in Video. IN Addition, there's a tracking option that lets you pinpoint, almost literally, a certain object to track that's in the frame.

It can be relatively tiny, so if you find a dog, say, and you set the focus mark to its collar, it'll track that collar as long as it's in the frame.

WOW so feature tracking work while recording video ?!
That means, you can do some steadicam shots with blurred background and still get your subject, whatever it is (as long as there is somme pattern on it), in focus automatically ?

..I... I feel I have an erection :/

That is the most spectacular upside surprise about this camera yet! I'd given up hope that general tracking was possible while running. I guess facial tracking is more technically impressive, but what you just described is really fantastic.

Thanks!

I was surprised as you are, trust me. But I tried it out last night and it certainly does work.

As long as there are discernible features in whatever you're tracking, the camera will hold onto it.

The Kit lens is by far a positive addition. It'll be a go to tool for several situations. It honestly makes me wish I had purchased the 7-14 anyway, but it's okay. Gotta save some money for the feature!

Lol

Dude, you should definitely post a video of this feature in action ! I've dreamt of that feature for so long..!

When I post up some footage it'll probably have that feature employed. I'm pretty sure of it, actually. Just gimme a bit more time here to organize the small pieces so I can shoot something quick.

Hopefully Philip's and Hunter's footage will suffice for one more day.

I hear ya. Buying lenses could get really expensive. I'm going to just get what I need in addition to the kit lens and not go wacky with all kinds of lenses.

The Kit Lens will take care of most of your situations outdoors, I think. Unless you're looking for special hyper shallow DOF shots at wider focal lengths, then you'll have to migrate over to primes.

Fun times, man. Next week is fabricating the PL mount. Cooke S4's whaaaat?

I tried focus tracking on the HS250, and it is not that good. Does not work well when only a side of a face is visible, does not work well when zooming in or out. Works more or less ok when a person just walks across the frame or towards the camera. The major downer: works in full auto mode only. Does facial recognition and focus tracking on the GH1 work in manual/priority mode?

Once it's turned on it looks to work in every mode.

There's even a quick switch button to go from facial to target to regular.

That is what I'm thinking. The kit lens will be my bread and butter lens, especially during the daytime. Then for night shoots, especially if I don't have as much control over low lit conditions, I'll probably end up using a couple Nikon primes. At least that is a good starter.

There are so many freaking lens options for this camera. I think I need to do some lens research before the GH1 reaches the US.

If it shows the yellow crosshair then it indeed should be working. Interesting. At least Panasonic did not cripple this one.

I thought it wouldn't work in video mode but the trick is to enable it in Manual or Custom mode and then it works across everything.

I found that out when I enabled ISO 1/3 increments and it ported over to Video/Movie mode, but the option for it is NOT in Movie Mode's menus.

For reference: Each setting seems to have it's own set of menus, with Custom having the most settings to tinker with and Movie mode the least. Seems as though most of the Custom settings effect the way Manual Movie Mode works as well.

Recording video is available in all modes as well aside from one, which I can't remember. Even the automatic adjustments the camera makes are pretty spot on.

It does not surprise me that AF tracking works in video mode, after all, this is one of the more hyped features of the new 200/250/300 camcorder family. What surprises me that it works in manual mode. On the "normal" camcorders it works in auto mode only. One more reason to get the GH1 instead of the TM300.

with lens adapter you lose all your autofocus options correct? and how do things look without the OIS system with 3rd party lenses?
