The Orphange

Yeah, I posted a thread a while back after seeing the trailer. I saw the film back around the holidays. I liked it, for sure, but it was no "Pan's Labyrinth."

Presented by Guillermo Del Toro is very different from "Directed by…".

There had to be one.....

....now I'm having second thoughts. I thought Del Toro directed it. (I have seen almost nothing about. Just a word here and there.) I loved Pan's.

Looks like I'm not rushing out tomorrow.

Did Rambo open yet?

Don't think so but I would take the Orphanage over Rambo any day of the week.

Del Toro wouldn't present something he didn't like it had shades of the Devil's Backbone in it.

Really enjoyed it, played to all my fears of children. It was very clever in it's ability to feed those who are frightened by gore as well as those who are frightened by the implication of gore, and especially those who get nervous through thick atmosphere.
I didn't give too much weight to the whole "presented by Guillermo Del Toro" thing, because honestly I think he'd back anything coming out of Spain that was half competent.
To me, it felt like it really collected all of the ways to scare an audience and did so in a mature, classic and respectable way. Definitely recommend.

Spoiler ...

What a selfish lil bi%$h. Yeah take the easy way out, hurt everything that is living and now, hurt every living person that loves you.

S U I C I D E I S N O T T H E A N S W E R

end of rant :p

I guess my problem is, I cant really feel the love of the lady for the lil BRAT, simon, in order for her to sacrifice her own life. Nor did I feel the sentimental value of the orphanage to her. Even though we were told that she used to live there as a child.

This movie is not 10% as good as Pan's Laybrinth, but then again it wasnt directed by Guillermo.

More SPOILERS...

Just saw this tonight and I agree with you Dxmetal. I was really into it almost the whole way. Dug the suspense, the atmosphere, the performances. Top notch. But the ending defies all logic...The dead children need to be taken care of why exactly?

What was really a warped, selfish action on Laura's part was portrayed as the warm fuzzy climactic moment in the film - orchestra swelling, children laughing...Yay! They're all dead! Except for the husband, but he seemed to "understand." Please...

spoilers

I thought this movie was great. I for one am not a Del Torro fan. For instance, this movie was similar to one of his early movies, the one set in WWII, and this movie was farrrrrrrr superior. And I didn't like Pan's Labrynth either. This movie, however, was very spooky and a very well-told story.

I'll agree with you on one thing DVxMetal - they did not do a good job of showing why she loved the orphange as a child. So her sort of "rejoining" it at the end didn't play that well. But, I'd disagree with you on her love for simon. I felt like they spent every other scene showing how much she loved him.

Jared, I would somewhat disagree with you about the ending. I thought it was kind of sweet. I mean, all these children were burned alive and had been stuck here as ghosts ever since. Her committing suicide to rejoin her son and them (even though they didn't have that earlier scene to show how much she loved the orphanage - I think they believed that her purchasing the orphanage to live at as an adult was as much proof that she loved the place as they needed) was kinda touching.

The king of these movies is still The Others

OHMYGAWD that trailer sure gave me the goose bumps.

Have to see it. I hope it comes over here soon.

i'm trying to outline this film, I'd like opinions. On minute 23 Simon and Laura go on the 'hunt, but then on minute 33 Simon goes missing...which one is the act I turning point?

For that plot point I usually think in terms of what the protagonist does/the action they take. I'm not sure in this case, I'd have to watch it again though.
