FEATURE: The Old Livingston House - A Family Adventure Comedy

Final ful day of shooting completed

Final ful day of shooting completed

Thanks Pixelated, she is showing signs of improvement and has been moved to a rehab center.

We shot our final full day shoot on Saturday. We had a great time and everything came out fine. Still have a couple of shoots for this week, about an hour or two each. then I have some establishing shots to get and we should be done.

I hope to have a rough copy on DVD by the end of the week to show to a couple guys with more movie experience then me, then begin the final edit.

Robert Cohen, who is scoring the movie will be back in town the middle of next month and we plan to spend two weeks on adding the music.

In July I hope to take care of anything that doesn't seem right and be ready to submit it for the Ft. Laderdale film festival in August.

We have finished shooting. I have a rough copy on DVD that is running 2 hours and 7 minutes. I would like to get it down to about an hour and forty-five minutes. This is turning out to be more difficult then I expected. I have given a copy to the guy doing the score and can't wait to see how that comes out.

We are looking in to other film festivals to enter after the one in Fort Lauderdale, and looking into different ways to distribute.

After all this is wrapped up I will start on my next screenplay from one of my other novels, but I don't know which one it will be.

Hey Dre83

Hey Dre83

The sound turned out good through about 90% of the movie. The only scenes I had trouble with is when we had to get a little bit wider of a shot. For instance I had two actors sitting on the porch of an old cabin. We were using a shotgun mike on a boom, and when I would get a shot of both actors and some of the cabin. I ran into problems. Mic too far away. I think I will have to voice over about three scenes, unless there is something I can do in post that I haven't figured out yet.

I did a lot of editing between shoots. I think it was a wise decision for a couple of reasons.

1. It gave me a good idea of what I had and if I missed anything I could pick it up the next time we were at that location.

2. My story takes place over twelve days, so when I edited together a scene I would put it in a folder for that day in the movie. Then when it came time to put the movie together. I just went to day one and started pulling scenes. When I would get to a scene I didn't have, I would find the clips and edit it together at that time and put it in its place on the time line. I probably had about 70% edited. Also (since I don't know what I am doing) I think it made the task less overwhelming.

This is what worked for me, but like I said, I've never done it before so I don't know what the right answer is?

Hope things are going well on EXIT 101.

Congrats! post production can be the most rewarding part, especially working with a composer. I don't know where in cfl you are but i'd definitely reccomend submitting it to the monthy filmslam at the Enzian in Maitland (orlando) if it's under 25 minutes.. there's a good community there with potential feedback, and its free to submit.

I couldnt see a movie title anywhere? Can you let me know? I'd like to update your thread title :)

Noel,

I would like that very much, I guess when I started, I never thought I would get this far.
The Old Livingston House is the movie title.

It's actualy easy.... Besides AFTER camera, there's also LEFT and RIGHT out of frame... So go stand close where the action is, but more to the left or right to be out of frame....

Also longer boompole can help.

1 inch out of frame = out of frame...doesn't need to be 30160461644646 feet

Editing is going very well. I must be learning more as I go along, because it seems like I am doing a better job. Will be adding the music next week.

I have also written a song called Summer Daze, we are going to put it in the movie. Ashley Baker, who is one of our leads is going to sing the song. I was in the studio with her the other day while we were making the first cut. There is still some work to do on the music, but it is turning out better then any of us ever thought it would. I got some shots of Ashley singing in studio that day. Yesterday we went out to a local beach and I got shots of her so we could put together a music video. This will be a nice extra to put on our DVD, might even launch a singing career.
Here is the chorus. I have to cut the song down a little because its a bit over four minutes. Of course we will only use a small part of it in the movie.

Monday we are going to do a shoot on an old dock a friend of ours has on a lake, more stuff for the video. I will post some pictures soon.

It’s just a lazy summer, with no alarm clock
Sitting in the sun, on an old wooden dock
Waves roll in, while the sun is a blaze
Smile on my face won’t go away
I love being in a summer daze
Oh how I love being in a summer daze

While editing I came across a couple of scenes where the volume was lower then the rest of the movie. I was afraid I was going to have to get the actors back and do voice over. Luckily I was able to fix the problems in post. This is probably common knowledge for most people on this boad, but I will briefly share.

1. Cut an moved low volume to a different time line. (I'm working in Vegas Pro 8)
2. Turned the volume up on the new time line. On some of the clips this was enough.
3. Found a clip on YouTube about Audacity. This is free software that will remove background noise from recording. Don't get too excited though because it will only remove very minor noise and leaves a weird sound itself. I think it will be fine once I put the music in to cover it up.

If you Google Audacity noise removal, you will find out more and there is some information on Youtube on how to use it. I would tell you the clip I saw but I can't remember it.

I finished shooting the music video for Summer Daze but don't plan on doing anything with it till I'm done with the movie. I doing some minor adjustments on the editing and waiting on Robert Cohen to finish doing the score so we can put them together.

Beginning credits

Beginning credits

I took a couple of days to try and figure out how to do my beginning credits for our movie. I think it is working out really well. You can view it at...

Check it out and let us know what you think.

Robert is coming by Tuesday to begin dropping in the music, he has most of it complete so I can't wait to see how it goes.

Adding the music

Adding the music

Robbert came by last night and we began putting the music into place on The Old Livingston House. Most of the score is complete and we are placing, sizing and adjusting the volume. I may have done a smart thing by accident by not getting the music earlier. I cut the movie then burnt it to a disc, then I would watch it on tv. I would take notes then re edit and burn it again. This happened about seven times, I got it as good as I could before I began with the music.

I had heard that music makes all the difference in the world, but after this movie, I think it is a good idea, not to put the music in until you are completely convinced that you project cannot get any better.

There is a piece of advice for everyone from someone that has no idea what he is doing, so take it for what it's worth.

Done, done, done..........

Done, done, done..........

I have a finished movie!!!!!!! Cannot believe it. We are sending it off to the Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival on Monday. Just hoping we get accepted. We are also scheduling a party for the cast and crew to get together and watch our little masterpiece. I will continue to update whats going on.

We have a trailer

We have a trailer

For some reason I am unable to upload it to youtube, no idea why. You can see it on IMDB. It's about the only thing we have up so far, but we are working on it. Like to hear what people think, so check it out.

Ever consider chopping this up into segments and releasing it as a kids web series? It reminds me of shows that came on PBS way back when.

Good luck!

Hey Kholi

Hey Kholi

I have never considered a web series, one reason is I'm not exactly sure what they are or how they work. We have just began applying to film festivals, and also planning to self distribute DVD's in the near future. This may be something worth looking into in a few months. Do you have any experience in doing a web series.
