The official "I got my AF100" thread

I've used a rubber collapsible hood that functions as a mattebox/lens donut on lenses not wider than 24mm on my GH1 so I suspect this will work for the AF camera also.
Out of curiosity- what is the brand of rubber collapsible hood you are using, editman? IS it universal or do you have one for each of your lenses?

Won't be able to share the footage unfortunately. But.......looking good!

What adaptor are you using here?

AF100 First test shoot

AF100 First test shoot

My first AF100 test shoot:

Details

Shot with: Lumix 14-140, Lumix 20mm, Minolta AF 50mm 1.7
Everything shot at 400 ISO
24P 1080 AVCHD, with some 60P VFR thrown in.
Minor color correction in FCP

Thoughts
This is the first time I have ever used this camera. I have used a GH1 many times and an HVX200 so the camera is certainly not alien to me.

Overall I really love using the camera so far. Operationally it is a dream to use. All the features of a video camera with the creative possibilities that a larger sensor can provide. I have no negatives about actually using the camera so far.

The footage I am very happy with, but have some issues. I think some shots are amazing, but I have definitely noticed some noise in my shots. The second shot (time lapse with sky & cars) definitely has tons of noise in the mids, like in the red building on the right. Color correction helped get rid of some, but I am definitely concerned with how much noise is in the building. I'm not sure what caused it as it was shot at 400 ISO. And I see the noise straight out of FCP via a Blackmagic intensity SDI to a Flanders Scientific monitor. The noise is present in other shots as well, mostly in the mids and darks. And both my detail settings are at -7, so if anyone has any ideas/suggestions about the noise, please chime in.

Really beautiful work, Ben!

Wish I could buy a paper from that guy...

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

I wonder, how does the noisey footage look when played directly from the cam to a large flat screen display? I know nothing about Panny cams, but I've heard Barry mention he doesn't like to go above -2 on Master Pedestal, and grimepoch mentioned -4 to -7 detail with +2 Coring. Good luck.

Well all I can say is the footage looked great, I didn't see any noise pop out at me, and I am one of the ones who has seen a lot of noise on my system with other clips. I'd be totally happy with the footage you posted, honestly.

+1 Looked great to me!

Thanks very much for the compliments! I do really like the footage as well, I was just noticing noise where I didn't expect it.

And strangely I also don't really see the noise at all in the vimeo clip. I assume the compression is hiding most of it. Honestly, the vimeo clip looks much better than when I watch it on the broadcast monitor straight out of FCP. But I guess that is normal? As the broadcast monitor is not over-saturating colors, crushing blacks, or any number of other things that compression and watching it on a computer display are probably doing. I have a real shoot next week with an interview and some B-Roll, so that will also be a good test.

As for the paper guy - I watched him for 30 minutes and he never sold a paper. He said he thought it was because today was a holiday (for who??)

My impression of AF100 noise live out of the camera is that there is always noise in the blacks and mids, even at ASA 200 much like HVX200A/HPX170. Coring at +2, detail at -5 helps. The good news is that ISO 800 doesn't look much worse and chroma noise seems to be reduced compared to pre-pro models I saw. To me, the ability to shoot at ASA 800 is a big step forward from an HPX170, along with full raster resolution and shallow DOF.

Im finding the exact same thing except my blacks are pretty noise free. Yes ISO 800 looks great, was testing outside and in last night. The shadowy area's is where Im seeing the most "noise", especially if it's a little overexposed, even at ISO 200. Timur said it a while ago, nail your exposure and it helps tons. All of this was at Cine D, Cine Matrix and your same settings, black balanced every time I changed gain, Master Pedal was a 0, today I tried MP at -2, we'll see. When I shot the same scene's at Cine V, alot of the noise disappeared, I assume it's because the mids are getting crushed a little. When I put a little curve on the same Cine D clips in Looks, that helped hide the noise as well. I'm on a newer MBP, Nvidia card, FCS2, transcoding to ProRes.

On a side note, I did a Zebra at 100% test and looking at my files highlights clip right there. 105% blew out.
