The official "I got my AF100" thread

Won't be able to share the footage unfortunately. But.......looking good!

I had 5 of my old Nikon lenses "repurposed" by RP Lens (dealt with Peter). The service at RP Lens was great and they fixed up the 50mm which had gotten a little loose.

Congrats. Two quick questions - do your nikkors still breathe after the mod? - when you say the 50mm was loose, did you notice a shift in the image when focusing (not breathing, but a jump like the glass internals are loose)?

I got a call from UPS saying that my package has come to the border and that they would be happy to take care of brokerage for me, however they need me to call back to confirm. My family, being what they are, didn't call me to tell me i needed to get in touch with them. So now their offices are closed. I'm thinking i'll have to call them first hing in the morning, but wonder if that's even enough time for the package to get to me before the end of the day....

What do you think?

Broker it yourself. It's a five minute drive up 55th avenue to the Customs office from the UPS depot in Lachine. It will save you a lot of money (depending on how they assign a broker and which broker you get.) You will of course need to pay the appropriate duty (which you can check in advance) GST and (depending on how you brought the camera in) PST but that's all. No extra fees, no hidden costs. You don't need to do any paperwork. UPS will provide it and the customs office will simply fill out their own and allow you to pay the taxes.

It's also worth it do it yourself. Next time a shipment comes in where they don't ask you, and it's tagged with a ridiculous brokerage fee, you can have them hold the shipment in Lachine while you clear customs yourself. You bring back a stamped paper and they release it to you. No silly UPS-broker tax.

The other advantage (or disadvantage depending on how you see it)... is that you get a call when the paperwork is ready and you know you're going to pick up your package that very day. No "UPS guy didn't ring the bell," no "UPS guy couldn't find the address," no "UPS guy left it at the wrong house," no "UPS guy left in the recycling bin on recycling day (NOT KIDDING)."

Uh... our offices are 5 minutes from the UPS, FedEX and Purolator depots. I visit customs a lot and there's never a line -- usually no one. The last officer I asked said she didn't understand why more people didn't come do it themselves. If it takes 45 minutes and saves me a couple hundred dollars, I'd say that's a good hour.

so you're saying i need to call UPS when their lines open tomorrow at 7:30, and tell them that I will do what exactly? Sorry, i've never done this type of thing before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I PM'ed you so we don't clutter up this thread with "How to deal with UPS in Montréal, Québec" posts. :)

:) :)
I loved Yello ever since they did "Oh yeah" for Ferris Beuller's Day Off. Back in the 90's I had a best of compilation vinyl of all their hits. Great band.

edit correction: should say 'used in' as the song was not written for that movie even though it fitted so well

Hi, Editman! Two questions:

1: Does the camera come with the adapter to isert the micro? I have a couple of AT875R for both my upcoming cameras but, I'm not sure whether the cameras come with the adapter to hold the micro.

2: Still about the Mattebox... How does it work? All my Lumix lenses are zooms (except the Macro) and they go back and forth as I zoom. It goes forth and pushes the Mattebox, right?.. When it goes back the Mattebox stays where it is and it will show on the shoot, right? or wrong?

Thanks.

Miguel

1: There is a microphone holder included with the camera so your AT875R will fit right away. I do recommend to have a short 7 inch cable between mic and camera to avoid any excessive cable.

2: All lenses that extends during zoom or focus will cause some problems when you use a mattebox. I would recommend to use a lens hood instead of a mattebox. You don't need the mattebox for ND-filters since they are already in the camera. Some lenses works even thou they extends. I've used a rubber collapsible hood that functions as a mattebox/lens donut on lenses not wider than 24mm on my GH1 so I suspect this will work for the AF camera also.

Jason, Along with about 5 other questions, I asked the breathing question of Peter at RP Lens: "Should I expect much of a problem with "breathing" (change in image size with focus adjustments) with these lenses?" His reply: "Breathing is going to be more or less depending on focal length, you might want to put them up on an dslr body and look at them. I personally shoot commercials with a Nikkor set on a Canon 7D, I don't go to the job worrying about breathing lenses, if I see it I have my own work-arounds that work for me. For the $ savings for me and my client, it's worth dealing with."

I've only played with the 20mm f2.8 lens thus far and did not notice any breathing with follow focus from 18 inches to 8 feet wide open. I have another 9 or 10 Nikkor lenses to go through today. The focus ring on the 50mm was loose in that it would move a little without adjusting focus. RP Lens thought maybe I had dropped it at some point and "dampened" it down. Now for the aperture rings and focus rings, all 5 lenses are smooth. With all lenses having an outer diameter of 80mm through the use of screw-on adapters, I am using a single $40 rubber lens hood for all lenses rather than a matte box. David.

@Editman: Thanks a lot for the replies. I'm glad the cameras come with the Micro support piece and, I suspected the mattebox would be a problem. I'll leave that for when I am able to buy Zeiss Prime Lenses.
