I dunno, John & David.
I used to think that as well about Donner.
Don't get me wrong, I still think it is the best superhero film ever
(even though I have come around on The Dark Knight--I know, I know).

But, I think a lot of the credit should go to the amazing cast (especially Reeve).
I mean that was meant-to-be casting if ever there was.
I get chills just thinking about his performance.

But, the ending always left me torn.
Not Lois dying (that is a fabulous, heart-wrenching scene).
Not even the reversing the earth's axis bit (because he's Superman and dammit, he can do anything).
But the "Choose, but choose wisely" rocket scheme.

My kids love watching that "How It Should Have Ended" series on youtube.
I explain to them that a story has to have a journey by definition...
That "Cheat codes" or "Warp Zone Shortcuts" don't work outside the world of video games
(as in the The Wizard of Oz HISHE episode).
But, in the case of Superman, this series kinda hit on my issue:

Of course, this following shot (one of the best ever) usually made me forget all about that little Krypton-sized plot hole:

I watched Superman I again just recently, and still have to give the best superhero movie crown to this film. I love The Dark Knight, but Superman I is a more pure representation of the comic book genre. It's a superhero movie with a capital S, taking all the fun, silliness and unabashed, uncomplicated heroism of the genre and taking it to its highest expression without becoming camp. With The Dark Knight, as great as it is, you almost get the feeling that if Nolan could get away with doing the film without putting Wayne in the batsuit, he would.

On the other hand, I watched Superman II for the first time in ages recently...

*Granted, I haven't caught the Donner Cut, but frankly, I don't see how it could be savaged...

Yeah, they tipped over into camp with that one, which shows what a high wire act Donner pulled off in the first one. I caught parts of the Donner cut on AMC and it's interesting, but disjointed.

Most of the stupidity of Superman II was the low-brow gag stuff Dick Lester shot. The Donner Cut is much more like the first movie, but unfortunately, he didn't have everything he originally planned.

Chad, Reeve gets major props. There has never been any other screen Superman who ever came close, and it's hard to imagine that there could be. They should just retire the role.

It speaks well of Reeve that no one has ever owned a superhero role like he did with that one. (Maybe -- maybe -- Hugh Jackman with Wolverine -- but there's no one else to compare it with.)

Oh, by the way . . . on him, the costume did not look silly. You get the right man in the part, and you don't have to worry about changing it.

What I really, really don't get about the last several efforts is what's so flippin' hard about getting THIS right?

Don't get me started-
That new suit could be easily reused for the inevitable porno spoof with little-to-no changes.
...which I guess is really quite efficient on their part.
(hehe "on their part")
