Not sure how long names have been thrown around to direct the next Superman but just read this recent article below of some of the possible Directors Warner Bros. is interested in, though not sure the sources are 100%, nontheless it is interesting, so I thought it would be cool to get some of you guys views about the directors listed, what would be some of the cons and pros(In your opinion) said director would bring to the new Superman. Here's my thoughts.

http://heatvision.hollywoodreporter.com/2010/09/superman-darren-aronofsky-ben-affleck.html

1. Darren Aronofsky-
Pros: Has a deep understanding of story and would rely heavily on story rather then Action.
Cons: Is at time a bit too dark. As much as it works for Dark Knight, Superman has always been a light hearted character. It can be done well with a tid bit of darkness, but don't think audiences will forgive if their man of steel is too dark. Plus it's Superman come on!

2.Ben Affleck-
Pros: Has proven himself as a capable director
Cons: He's been Aflleck

3. Duncan Jones-
Pros: Has a nice buzz base of his film "Moon"(side note, haven't seen film yet)
Cons: Might not be able to handle such a caliber of a project, franchise too big to give to a somewhat unknown director by Hollywood standards.

4. Jonathan Liebesman
Pros: Young and Hungry.
Cons: The same may apply as far as being able to handle such a big franchise.

5. Matt Reeves
Pros: J.J Abrams can be a great go to guy for Star Trek inspirations
Cons: Cloverfield

6. Tony Scott
Pros: It's Tony Scott
Cons: Maybe a bit too heavy on style rather than substance

Zack Snyder-
Pros: Real great at adapting, stays true to the source material.
Cons: Can be also a bit too dark and too stylish which can be a Pro in other's opinions.

Keep in mind these are just my opinions so try not to bash me for the Cons:evil:

So just base on the above list, my vote would be for Zack Snyder.

Eventhough I've been against remakes/reboots lately, I can make an exception for Superman because it's been since the 80's since we saw the man of steel at it's finest in live action. I'm sure we all try to forget that disaster 4 years ago.

So list your directors you'd love to see take this on and their pros and their cons.

Aronofsky.

Not my favorite, Loved Pi, Requiem was great, LOVED the fountain first time, liked it second time, but for some reason HATED it third time and all other times after that. The wrestler I couldn't sit through.

But still, just cause aronofsky + superman? I wouldn't know what to expect. I know that if it was aronofsky, I wouldn't watch it as a filmmaker, I'd just go and see, and take whatever he gives me. He's one of those few directors that I can just take.

Whatever tarantino does I will watch and like. For example. Same with Inarritu (if I'm speling it right). I'll just take it. Same with Hitchcock. I'll take it. Not Tim burton though, I can judge that, or at least that place in my head is conjured up.

If aronofsky did superman, I wouldn't know what to expect.

Also as OP, just opinions, please don't bash my judgment, mine isn't a very important opinion :)

Can we add a choice for "Don't Really Care"?

Don't get me wrong, I'm actually a fan of the superhero genre (with a few exceptions). But I get the feeling that DC, Marvel and the like are less and less interested everyday in making interesting films about their properties.

And yeah in the last one, I can only remember one shot, one shot not even scene, that i liked, picture wise. The one of superman falling, cliff, real real long shot.

So yeah, if the one shot I remember is superman falling down, not cool. I didn't like it. Gimme the older supes anyday.

My problem wouldn't be with who directs it. It'd be with who'd play supes. I just saw the new star trek. Good effin movie. But. They're kids. Male actors these days are not sitting with me, in the sense that I was goosebumping violently through the expendables. Finally, real balls of steel in an action flick.

So refreshing. I really didn't care for anything and enjoyed the expendables TREMENDOUSLY. It was fun. It was the daddys of the 'action flick'. It wasn't some talented kid who'll grow up to be a fine actor, it wasn't a cute face, it wasn't all that, it was effin RAMBO. and THE LAST BOY SCOUT. and HERO. and even if for five min, the TERMINATOR.

So yeah, to add to the poll (if it's kosher with the OP for funsies) who would play supes? Please no boys. Please no peter parker. Please.

I'm surprised the Wachowski's aren't on the list, considering their history with Warners. They've been downgraded in my esteem since the first Matrix but I still think they are capable of great work.

I think I remember after the first Matrix they tried to purchase the rights to Terminator 3. Not sure whether they wanted to throw the two series together, but that might have been amazing. Imagine a Wachowski directed Terminator 3 that ended with Skynet creating the first generation of The Matrix.

IF that's what they wanted to do with it, and IF rumors of them wanting to buy T3 were true.

I'm gonna put in a vote for Duncan Jones. Moon was a great little film, made with a lot of practical effects and real sets. I'd like to see that kind of thinking in a Superman film. My second choice would be Zack Snyder. Other than that, Aronofsky would do a fine job, but I'd rather he tackle more unique and less "safe" projects with his offbeat sensibilities and visual talents.

Also, Duncan Jones has another film he is working on now, called Source Code. It is a sci-fi/thriller a bit bigger in scope than Moon. So he would have some more experience with a bigger scale film before jumping into Superman.

I would also have supported a Wachowski bros. Superman film. There was a rumor floating around about a year ago, not long before Warner Bros. approached Nolan about Superman. Basically, the rumor was that Warners meet with the Wachowskis about doing a Superman trilogy. It would have been a total reboot, starting with the origin story in Smallville, etc. I thought that sounded awesome. The Neo vs. Agent Smith battle at the end of The Matrix Revolutions was pretty much a darker looking version of the type of action a Superman film would need these days.

Maybe they didn't want to tackle another trilogy, or felt that what they did in their Matrix films was enough of that for them? Between the action and world building of the Matrix trilogy, and the colorful antics of Speed Racer, it makes one wonder how amazing a Wachowski bros. Superman flick could be.

They actually wouldn't be a bad fit, the only thing is I wouldn't want to see them do a trillogy lol. Again I think those guys would focus more on style rather than substance, I wanna see Superman done with some character and story development, save the action for maybe the last 30minutes of the film, hey that's just me.

darren aronofsky would do something wicked with kryptonite tho... kryptonite's freaky stuff.
:thumbsup:That my friend is something I would love to see.

My thinking was that they would focus more on directing a Superman film, and have someone else write the scripts. Of course, they seem to write all the films they direct, so perhaps they wouldn't be down for that?

As for them doing a trilogy, I think the problem with the Matrix trilogy was that they took the character of Neo too far in the first film to really need more stories with him. Compared to most other trilogies, the hero doesn't develop nearly as quickly as Neo did by the first film's end. The other thing was that they didn't seem to know what else to do with Agent Smith, besides giving him the copy/paste ability he had in the sequels. Agent Smith's character also didn't have the same level of character development that he did in the first film.

With Superman, they'd have a lot of material to draw on and maybe would be able to plan out a trilogy that would provide for more challenging villains to face off against, and a longer character arch for Superman to deal with in the second and third films?

A new rumor that Robert Zemeckis is circling Superman. That feels oddly right to me, if he does it live action and not his crap-tastic CGI motion capture method. Zemeckis' kind of energy and humor was something I felt was lacking in Superman Returns, which I found utterly charmless.

Nolan would do one Kal-el of a job. But if it ain't him, please let it be Zemeckis...

And lets cast an actual MAN this time--

I guess it's Snyder. I'm not that excited about it. He doesn't seem to have a light touch or a sense of humor, which I think Superman needs, but it could be worse.
