The new Nikon D4

I can't imagine it will be any softer than the 5D especially straight to prores over the HDMI out. The 5D softness with Leica glass is just about right for me aesthetically sans moire and aliasing. Nikon look like they've addressed just about all of our 5D headaches but the jury is still out on moire and aliasing. I'm really interested in seeing how it handles highlight rolloff. The recent Sony sensors have a couple of stops over the Canons.
I want to see footage recorded to one of the external devices. Guys in the FS-100 forum say they don't see much difference when using the Atomos and other devices. Will this reduce moire even more? I've had the same softness Hunter describes with the Lightroom Vari-ND

I'm going to throw my lightcraft in the bin and get the heliopan.

I own 3 Genus variable NDs, and they have the same image problems as the other low-cost variable NDs. ( mechanically well made, but optically they aren't any better )

You either go with old-school standard NDs or one of the new Heliopan uber expensive variable NDs, which does not have the same image problems.

Damn Dingo way to crush my spirit. Is the Heliopan definitely better?

I tested 5 Vari's with my GH2 and found the Fader "HD" to be the best for detail, lack of banding and lack of vingetting. $300 at B%H. I did not test the Heliopan as it is only 6 stops compared to 8 with the others. Genus was one of my test bed.

And did you test for the crosshatching effect that occurs because of the "8 stops". Where the spotted effect may not be immediately noticeable on some shots but varying areas of an image will have different exposures? The heliopan doesn't eliminate it but its much improved.

Yes, I ran the filters all the way past their 8-stop points. In my assesment the Fader HD had the most even exposure across the frame, all the way to full on.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe this was shot on the D-4.

There is moire on the good doctor's blue and white shirt.
I would like to see this same shot at all 3 crop modes [FF, 1.5 and 2.7] to see if it is still there in 2.7.

Outside of that, the sharpness and resolution are high enough for me.

Would like to see the native files before any CC.

Youtube description says....
"The update includes both still imagery, as well as video interviews, shot entirely on Nikon's D3x and D7000 cameras."

Tags on the youtube video include D7000 and D3, but do not include D4.
