The new Nikon D4

Not likely. With all the info they've been open with, they would've touted a codec of that strength in all their PR. It's listed as H264/AVC so it's not 422. The bitrate looks to be 24mb/s as well.

H.264 AVC supports 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 as well as 10 bit video at the highest profile levels. Don't know yet what Nikon is using though.

I'll still stand by the likelihood that it's not 422 or 10-bit internal. That's something Nikon would no doubt make known to people because if they were smart enough to finally include some of the features they did, they know that if they had that card to play...to play it loud and clear.

"The D4 records... ... using H.264 encoding at 24Mb/s with B-frame compression."

that's what's written on DSLR News Shooter

As I understand it, the D4 has no sensor cleaning system, correct? That would concern me a bit. Seems like a big oversight.

Am I right in assuming that with an external recorder through the D4's HDMI output, 4:2:2, 8bit, 50 or 100mbps should be possible with something like the Ninja?

Nope. "sensor cleaning is employed by vibrating the OLPF"

Nikon Press Release

Thanks, I thought it was handled only through dust deletion software. I'm trying hard to find a reason not to buy this thing. :-)
One of the best reasons not to buy is that Canon's 4K Cine DSLR is coming, and the D800 should also have a similar video feature set as the D4.

I would keep a skeptical eye on these things until lots of film-making reviews are in. The D800 may have a different sensor/processor and a smaller feature set.

And I have doubts on a Canon 4K DSLR if it would undermine the C300. ( supposedly the C300 has this potential, but the software isn't there yet )

Canon has been dragging their feet for years, so I won't believe anything until the hardware is here and the reviews are out. ( Look at how long people have been expecting the 5D MK3 which is still nowhere in sight... )

This is a curious comment from that Q&A...

"When recording to either of the two memory cards, the HDMI output for monitoring is only for monitoring purposes, not suitable for recording."

Could that mean while recording to the cards (similar to 5D) that the output drops in quality somehow? Or perhaps it outputs 1080i only when recording to the cards? Hmm.

Yay! Interlaced is evil. Great to hear! Thanks for posting and for including the source. You DA MAN!

Yeah I was worried it might be interlaced.....yucky. Finally we can record 422 intraframe with a DSLR! albeit with extra hardware.

Sounds like the HDMI out is down rezzed to 480p when you're recording to cards. 24Mbit/s AVCHD looks ok for commercial work but for narrative work I'd be recording to a ninja.

Live view runs for an hour before it shuts down to prevent overheating. On a hot day my D90 used to shut down after 5 min. I was shooting with my NEX-5N for over an hour on a hot day before the sensor overheated so it appears the manufacturers are making progress with sensor heat.

Well, you'd always have the pulldown tool but...

And yes, with an HDMI uncompressed output, no one will accuse you to not be HD broadcast :D

Thanks Anthony (E :-)

So far I can't see too many flaws with this camera. I think a lot of us DSLR vets are going to be very interested in it. Canon are going to have to play catch up with the MKIII and C-DSLR. Now how do I convince Nikon to loan me one?
