The New Mac Pro

Sorry dont mean to beat a dead horse, but is anyone aware of any gfx card upgrade options for existing MAC Pro owners? Are the cards (I know old mac pro doesnt support SLI) on the new machines usable in existing mac pro's?

Yes, before it was the ATI x1900. Now it is the Nvidia 8800GT.

Correctamundo: The Nvidia 8800 GT(?) is a wonderful video card. I have one in my uber-fast PC. Thank you Apple for including PCI Express support in this new machine. Convinced me to switch..................

Is there any way to weasel a discount (without a student ID) on this pup?

Regards

Do you guys prefer the double ATI Radeon 2600 XT option or the NVidia 8800 for Avid Editing? If so I'm curious why?

Also someone told me I need to buy the HD's from apple If I want 4TB eventually, is this true?

Well here's something that kinda gets me: the new video cards are not compatible with the "classic" mac pro. They're PCI Express but for some reason the new video cards ship with a ROM that tells it not to work with the old mac pros. Now THAT pisses me off, because I was buying a computer that I can upgrade. To tell me that there are no upgradeable video cards for my machine is a slap in the face. If anyone else wants, there's an online petition here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/geforce8800

The idea, as I understand it, is that Apple can fix this with a firmware upgrade to the original mac pro, but they choose not to at the moment. I think at this point they'll release it on their own accord, but some gentle nudging can't hurt.

Double video cards won't yield more performance, it's just to add more monitors.

Apparently it is possible to hook up to 8 30 inch Apple Displays to one Mac Pro.

I can't wait to see someone with that setup.
