The New Mac Pro

Not a bad update. I'm happy w/ my older mac pro, but I'm sure some people will be happy for having waited.

Reading it, they also raised the price. I'm even happier with my buy, I could barely afford this one, I wouldn't have been able to afford the upgrade.

I'm going to wait for independent benchmarking before I comment on how good of an upgrade I think this is. Hopefully Apple relieved some of the bottle necks the previous Mac Pros had and these new guys will show a sizable performance increase.

Really nice specs (sans BluRay), but I agree, it should have debuted with a bottom price of about $200 less. It just makes more sense, I think, to have the bottom end tower come it at under $2k.

Help with upgrading the Mac Pro

Help with upgrading the Mac Pro

My Brother is going to get the new Mac pro. What upgrades would you guys recommend him getting? Any help would be appreciated.

what kind of application would he be using the mac for? my only is advice is buy upgrades from a third party and save some money, in my opinion apples ram/harddrive upgrades are overpriced.

if its going to be used for video editing, i would stack on some extra ram

He's going to be doing Video editing. I will recommend more ram. Anything else?

He's looking at CalDigit for HD storage.

finaly after months of waiting today is a good day for me. Iv been saving for one of the new suckers and now there out. Does anyone think its a bad idea to go with the smaller processor instead of the stock. its still double the old stock ones. Ill be interested to hear this response I should be buying one of these within the week.

Again, depends on how much power you need, what you're doing with it.

At any level, upping the RAM and a 500gb HD (from somewhere like OtherWorldComputing) is a good place to start. It's hard to have too much RAM and too much space.

Wonderful, PCI Express card support. Nvidia 8800 GTX should really gobble up tough video jobs in this new machine. :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

For existing MAC pro owners, is anyone aware of any video card upgrade options? This is about the only thing in my existing machine I think could use a poke.

And YES, where is blu ray support? I think its high time Apple sorted this out, especially with the current state of the format war now being almost a forgone conclusion.

I ordered the quad 2.8 yesterday. I don't think I need the 8 core at the moment. This will be a BIG leap from my PowerBook G4 867MHz.

It's nice but incremental
I don't think it's incremental.

1. "Harpertown" chipset (ie. 1600mhz bus, extra PCI slot)
2. 45nm Penryn processor
3. Double the computing cores at the same-ish price point.
4. Double the standard RAM (and double the RAM capacity)

These new Mac Pros will fly if you're running multiple applications at the same time, such as rendering HD in FCP, rendering in AE, and compressing DVDs in the background. It will be more than twice as fast as the last upgrade.
