The new Mac Pro coming later this year (take a look).

What exactly does that link have to do with the Mac Pro ? BTW the new Mac Pro was not unveiled but was a sneak peek unlike the new Mac Book Air.

unveiling...sneek peek...whatever you want to call it...Apple has never done it before. And what does the article have to do with Apple's attention grabbing ? Maybe they were trying to divert public attention away from the fact in the news they'll be involved in some of the biggest class-action lawsuits ....ever...and not for being Mr. Niceguy either. . If I had been in Tim's shoes...that's what I would have done !

ps....I love the new macpro...but seriously doubt it'll be ready for primetime this year, if you judge Apples past first macpro releases. Hopefully it won't be as big a flop as the cube !

Not sure this even needs saying, but this is far from first time Apple has announced a product that wasn't ready to ship. They used to do it regularly with computers, and the first iPhone was announced in January to ship in June, just about identical to this mid-year to end-of-year Mac Pro window.

Max....when ? I've owned macpro's since the blue & white ( I've owned 7 macs ) and while they might say the smaller products are coming, like the iphones and ipods, they never ever give the details ...and even less for the macpros, or any of their computer lines. Sorry but your wrong and Apples strategy has been well documented over the years. This is unprecedented. If you can give me an example of just once an Apple computer being prematurely unveiled, I'll eat my words !

Dude, that link is from 2011.

I don't think your conspiracy theory pans out here...

It was their MO for years to announce computers (especially new designs) 1-3 months before they were available (and often delayed further from there). Their supply chain wasn't always what it is today. The original 17" PowerBook, for instance, was announced in January and shipped around April.

And now they're in a similar situation, building an entirely new manufacturing line in the US for the Mac Pro.

Plus, with the "shock" of the new Mac Pro design, they may have figured it was better to give people some warning and plan their purchases (i.e. invest in Thunderbolt gear) leading up to its release.

All of these seem more plausible to me than the Mac Pro being some kind of distraction event to take away from allegations against the NSA that Apple didn't have much of a say in...

Plus, if they were trying to create a distraction, why not announce a new iPhone or something a lot of people actually care about? The Mac Pro market is minuscule...

oh....Dude ...well that ancient historical date of 2011 means that they were writing about a company that's been around since 1976 or thereabouts. I think by 2011 they had a pretty good sample...and not much has changed in the last year....until this week .

...and Max...show me one example where Apple has pre-released design and specs of a computer ...just one ? By the way...I also owned the first macintosh in '84 as well. It cost a grand with an education discount.

Having a formal announcement and them having supplyline difficulties is not what happened here. And perhaps the reason they didn't release a new iphone was because it wasn't in the pipeline, whereas the macpro design was just sitting there.

Here's an article about g5 specs released 4 days early and the Apple legal dept attempting to get them removed from all the websites that copied and pasted -

http://arstechnica.com/uncategorized/2003/06/163-2/

I remember following this like a hound dog because I wanted one real bad. The same was true of the g4 release...even more so....no warning. Interesting ...the arstechnica article says that when the specs were mistakenly published by Apple themselves 4 days early, they probably fired the webmaster who messed up.

Interesting to hear Foundry's acceptance of the Mac Pro. Seems like they are considering it a "professional" machine. Nuke with Open CL support soon to follow? I'd bet on it.

What?! But Apple abandoned us pros and forced iMovie X on us!

[h=1]Apple 5K Retina Display Coming?[/h]With the new Mac Pro packed with enough power to run three 4K displays at once, it’s reasonable to question where those 4K displays are coming from. While there are a few 4K monitors available now, there are none from Apple. The 27″ LED Cinema Display offers 2560 x 1440 resolution; however, that’s still a far cry from full 4K resolution at 4096 x 2160, or UHD 4K at 3840 x2160.
With the upcoming release of OS X Mavericks, Apple has released a new desktop background available at a resolution 5120 x 2880 – or 4x the resolution of the current 27″ LED Cinema Display.

While this desktop background is no sure thing for a 4K (or 5K) display from Apple, it sure makes a lot of sense that Apple would release a higher resolution display to accompany the work horse Mac Pro later this year.

I wonder how this will play out when it comes to drivers for video cards. I know there weren't a lot to begin with, but speaking of the hackintosh systems which relied on those drivers for those same video cards that would go in a mac pro. If no one is able to replace the video cards in the new mac pro will GPU companies just stop buidling mac drivers for their cards or is there some light at the end of the tunnel because of thunderbolt? I'm seriously considering a hackintosh build to compliment my macbook pro.

I have a feeling that the GPUs will be swappable, if not officially probably doable via a hack.

It was sarcasm. I have been with FCPX since day one, when many said Apple had abandoned pros.
I love FCPX. I was a day one user as well. Today it's just a great NLE. I opened PP the other day and though I was editing 5 years ago. Once you get into FCPX there is no turning back. I can't imagine what it will be like on the new Mac Pro.

Expansion options, even back in the day the old macpro was criticised for lack of expansion having only 3 slots (PC were not much better some having 4). once you had installed two graphics cards and say an eSata card that was it.
I love this new design, for me it's offers much more versatility. Say for example in 4 yrs time a new super graphics card emerges, you buy perhaps 2 or 4 of these which will already be housed in a stand alone case with PSU and simply connect via thunderbolt, for real data flow perhaps use 2 or 4 thunderbolt ports in parallel.
Land not just graphics cards....anything can be hooked up.
And wait until the fibre option of thunderbolt come on line, can't wait to see those speeds. It's a great modular design that can be configured anyway you want. They are going with this external bus theme.

many of the top graphics cards take up more than a single slot, so the expansion capacity was really even less at the top levels. However, you could convert one or two of the optical drive bays to HDD slots, giving a total of up to six slots. Our team has five HDDs internal.
