The new Mac Pro coming later this year (take a look).

The new Mac Pro looks slick and has an innovative design. I have friends at a TV station who edit on MP's but their data is stored on a server. This would be great for them.

But not so much for me. Even if the new MP costs the same as the old one, the total system would cost a lot more and clutter my office a lot more. I have a Kona card and an eSATA card that I would need to get a TB enclosure for. I have 4 HDDs I would would need to get an enclosure for. And I would need to get an external optical drive. All just to have a system compatible to what I already have (albeit more powerful).

Since I'm already complaining, how about putting the power button and a USB port up front to make it easier to turn on and hook up a thumb drive? And if I only want to use one 4k monitor (or none at all), can I get one with just one graphics card?

I guess we'll all learn more in the coming months. I might still get one. Or I might move to a hackintosh or PC and pocket the savings. We'll see.

And if I only want to use one 4k monitor (or none at all), can I get one with just one graphics card?

Amen. Hoping there will be the option to 'barely' kit it out... like a baby version specs wise. Would go for that without all the craziness.

Obviously nothing will better PCs. PC's are superior in every way that's why all Mac Pro's & Retinas MBs & I Macs have been commercial failures. Furthermore, from a business perspective the pathway to profitability can only exists within a PC workflow. Obviously thats why there are no successful & profitable Apple centric production companies or why no apple computers can be found on set. Plus we all know everyone who works professionally in production only use PC's for creating world class content. So why does Apple even bother ?

Like you I'm suspicious of product press releases but I'm also suspicious of someone offering such "unbiased" opinion.

Commercial failure? Google image this "laptops in coffee shop".

Laptops are going away in coffee shops and being replaced by smart phones at a rapid pace. For people reading email, googling sports and weather, posting on facebook, a laptop is over kill these days. People are getting used to "swipe" instead of a keyboard and many are fine with applications instead of programs.

Obviously this doesn't apply to pros or prosumers but they are a much smaller segment of the consumer base for laptops.

Once again, Apple plays catch-up and gives their cult-ish fanbase a shiny new set of blinders to justify their deathgrip on an inferior product/infrastructure/workflow. They do it every year with iOS, too. They have the best marketing and design team on the planet however, no doubt about that.

In what way will this be inferior? Will there be faster PC's? Of course but in no way will this new MP be inferior. It may not be better than a similar new 12 core PC but it isn't any worse either. In fact these days they are just about equal in terms of performance. It will all depend on price of course but the new MP will be a fully capable machine that will churn out some Emmy and Oscar award winning content. Could an equal PC do that as well? Sure but that doesn't mean one can call the new MP inferior. Outside of moving to a dual or quad socket PC the new MP will be superior to most other PC work stations on the market. Assuming one will have the cash for the 12 core beast.

When my 17" MBP came out it was far from inferior as well. Yes it was expensive but it was equal to the fastest PC laptop at that time. It is still a great machine so I'm not sure why you would say they are inferior. By moving to Intel CPUs nobody can really say anymore that MAC or PC is superior or inferior. They are about the same albiet at different price points.

So what is the benefit of cutting on a mac if you're an adobe user? I say this as a mac user myself but looking to buy or build a new editing machine. Seems like the mac pro will be just a lot of money. As much as I love OSX as my daily OS, seems like I could save a ton of money just building an editing PC.

I've research the Thunderbolt RAID products from various companies, including the T3 from CalDigit.

One big issue is HOW do you get existing files onto a Thunderbolt RAID or HDD from a non Thunderbolt equipped computer?

My MBPR has Thunderbolt, but my MacPro does not. I have four 2 Terabyte drives of content on the MacPro, but no way to get the off the MacPro onto a Thunderbolt RAID for use with the MBPR.

Developers should make a second I/O for Thunderbolt chassis.

Good point.

A GOOD Raid would have TB, USB3 and esata as connections to have a wider audience appeal.

LAN connection?

We have a NAS and we have to offload content all the time. A gigabit LAN goes a LONG way to making this happen. New Mac Pro, hooked up to gigabit LAN and the thunderbolt drive, old MacPro hooked up to gigabit LAN. Copy and paste with good transfer speeds.

You could do this with 10/100 LAN, but it would definitely be a overnight/24hour process.

...what's really amazing is....that there's not one comment about this anomalistic unveiling and the biggest news of the day.

http://www.usnews.com/news/newsgram...e-smacked-with-class-action-lawsuit-wednesday

Apple has never before unveiled a product before it's release. You don't find the timing suspicious ? knock knock !
What exactly does that link have to do with the Mac Pro ? BTW the new Mac Pro was not unveiled but was a sneak peek unlike the new Mac Book Air.

Not that hard at all, but it can be time consuming. Connect your Non TB computer to the MBP with a firewire800 cable. Connect your TB RAID, and then restart the MacPro while holding down the T key. Your MacPro will now appear on your laptop as a firewire drive. Copy all the files. Done.
You can also just network the machines together over Ethernet or WiFi too.

I dont mean "anything", i just meant perhiperals. Context makes this kind of obvious.

And Walmart sells iOS devices. Not Macs. ;)

Good set of speakers? Optical drive? More storage? 7-in-1 card reader? Again, it may meet all of *your* needs out of the box, but I doubt it meets *everyones* needs out of the box. Of course there is no one machine (or line of machines) that meets the needs of everyone.

I get where you were going w/the analogy. I just thought it it was funny that your 'low brow' example actually carried Apple's products. I remember the groans of the Apple faithful when this happend as they were appalled that the consumer electronics they used to define their sense of self were now being sold to the unwashed masses at Walmart.

mcgeedigital, something like this seems to be what you are asking for http://www.sonnettech.com/product/echo15thunderboltdock.html . And I am sure there will be more options come the release.
Add that, and something like the Pegasus Raid (which Has been spectacular for me of the last few years), and you have all that you need.
You could approach it that you have to buy all of these extras, but I really like the fact that you can make your system work for your needs, and upgrade and/or add what you need, when you need it.
