The new Mac Pro coming later this year (take a look).

That's a very cool looking black tube thingy with a hole in the top. I want one.

Well, I guess this shouldn't surprise me. I just purchased a fully loaded Imac.

That has got to be the stupidest form factor ever. I don't need a spaceship shaped column. There isn't any way that thing could be rack mounted or put in a road case. Any extra cards will have to be in an external enclosure now. Oh boy, one more thing to hook up. Sorry, but I think this thing is a joke from a practicality standpoint.

Sure would be nice if they made a rack mount version but I doubt it tremendously.

It's not like I've ever disliked Apple...the products are awesome, just too damn expensive. I'll wait for the PCs that copy their ideas for less...lol.

I posted this in the other thread (in the FCPX sub-forum), but I really think it isn't as bad as this.

I see it as buying a camera body and then adding what you want to it. It's modular. You buy a brain, and then connect it to storage. A couple cables running to whatever tower of storage you need placed wherever you need (rack mounted if you want!), cables running to your monitors (always have those still), and maybe one Bi-directional 20GB/s I/O device on your desk. That sounds pretty good to me.

A road case??? WTF? You can put this thing in a car cup holder! Extra cards???? This will drive 3 or 4 4k monitors. TB2 dude! 4k editing while simultaneously rendering in the background! It's like Tony Stark flew in and designed this thing.

itube.

Meh.

So we can get a spaghetti tb cables going to external boxes that are holding the pci cards this should have had in the first place.

And at just 9.9 inches tall with a diameter of just 6.6 inches, it’s a pro desktop computer that can actually sit on your desk. ...and also functions as a sex toy.

but seriously, I'm not clear how many Petaflops this runs at or how many yottabytes of storage it has.

Some of you guys are not getting it.... Just apple haters and it's obvious!

PCI cards built in? Think forward guys. TB2 guys!

Odd looking case, but the specs so far seem awesome.

Sounds like the wait could potentially be worth it if you can swing the price tag, which if you'd been waiting for a mac pro, you should be able to.

Interested to hear more

What about those of us who want a desktop CPU and GPU without a $2500+ price tag? Like a mac desktop with an i7 and an nvidia GPU for $1200-$1500. Where is that option Apple? Not all pros can afford hugely expensive machines. Not with people wanting to pay next to nothing for video anymore.

I was hoping the new mac pro would be a modular system that was stackable. Like a series of mac mini style boxes with a range of selection between CPU moduals, blu-ray burners, HDD/SSD boxes, etc. Then maybe would could have had a CPU modual with a single i7 in it for $800-$1000 and when we wanted more power we could swap it out for a more expensive Dual Xeon modual without having to swap out any of our other moduals. Modular like RED cameras.

Wow, I'm with dusty on this one, the design is mind-blowing. It's also about 1/8 the size of the old Mac pros, so external boxes are kind of "whatever; who cares?". To me anyway.

With my longing for a mobile workstation that isn't a tank, all-in-one or a notebook, this comes at just the right time... Looks small enought to fit in a backpack with accessories, but with full-power, PC components.
