The new IMDb layout

isn't it the same? I can still do the same I did before using the side bar. I don't know, I can't find anything strange.
Maybe because I mainly use my iPhone with the mobile version....

Anyone else miss the old one that was simple to navigate and you had everything right in front of you?

Agreed.
Not a fan of this new image heavy design.
Maybe it's just because I was used to the old one, but I find myself having to scroll much more than I did before - which is annoying.

the FAQ that looks similar to the message boards, and the much longer page, and the double plot summary, one on top and another one in the middle of the page. duplicating the top billed and the cast, adding the video portions like the trailers and such.

i would say i want the ability to remove boxes i don't want.

i liked the details up as well.

It suuuuuuuucks. I've sent feedback as well, but if you look at the contributor comment board and see the IMDb staff responses, you see they're totally committed to the new design, ie, the irritating celebrity fan site format as opposed to the easy to read professional credential format. Bah.

It seems fine, maybe a few things I don't like. Personally I find this one much easier to navigate, even if you have to scroll a bit more.

To be honest, I see this a lot with well established sites. Whenever they change it everyone get frustrated and angry because they changed how you navigate or where buttons are. Everytime facebook changed people would be in an uproar, saying they like it the way it is (which is funny because they complained about the one they're now used to).

Why exactly don't people like it?

For the reasons mentioned above.

I understand a certain hesitation against change, but there's bad interface and there's good, and this new one seems more focused on 'looking good' than being functional. The old one was more functional and, for a site like that, better.

MySpace, Hotmail and Yahoo mail all let people keep the 'old' style if they wanted to. There's no reason IMDb can't do the same.

I think it's awful, especially the info pages for films...you have to scroll three times as much to see the same information. It's ridiculous.

I agree. It feel less functional.

Specifically:

There is less information on the page and more LARGE pictures and posters. They don't have to be that big. We get it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If they added additional features or need to make room for additional content, then, and only then, would it require a new layout. From what I can tell, it's just a rework of the existing features and content, pretty useless redesign. If it stays, I'll get the information that I normally got from IMDB at other places.

i thought most posts clearly said at least one thing they did not like about the site. they did not just say

"it sux, i don't like change."

also too much spacing between parts or boxes.

i don't even remember the right column that is very busy and eats up most of the screen for no apparent reason, part of the rest of the page suffers a lot from it.

Weird, it reminds me of Myspace or a random generic social networking site. That's a shame they sacrificed simplicity.

They should have an option to toggle between "New" and "Classic" views, IMHO.

They could then record the number of Classic toggles out of the number of site hits to see if the change is truly appreciated.

I'm surprize no one has mentioned the "Money" factor. That's the only reason they redesigned it, for advertising dollars. What is the first thing you notice now when you go on the page? Yup, Big Trailers for movies.

Like everything else that is done in business, it's not done for practical reasons but for money. I really hate when I log on to the site and a big Widescreen trailer pops up in my face, but what can you do...? Nothing, so I just try to hit Exit or navigate to another page quick as I can so I can avoid watching the ad...

I don't like it either.

YouTube is also constantly changing their layout. And EVERY change makes it worse than it was. Why can't they just leave well enough alone?

Is it the same new layout on IMDb Pro?

That's actually a good question since the Imdb pro do away with ads.., not a Pro member though so not sure if those trailer banners pop up.

If you happen to be operating a business there are few practical pressures more significant than making money.

I totally agree, but you'll find 9/10 times, businesses do what they do for money and I guess as a business you can't blame them.
