The New Guy, with some questions sprinkled in

How’s it going? I’m new here. This seems like a great place for discussions and etc.

Like most of you, I’m into filmmaking. I’ve done one half hour project as a feature on gender roles for a psychology class, with the piece basically being a comedy with fictional characters and roles reversed. I used a Sony TRV19 to shoot it. In the end, it seemed to go over really well. For years I had wanted to start doing movies and that opened the door for me. Now, with the demise of my band, I’m selling my drums and planning to buy a DVX100 in the next few weeks. I learned to edit in Adobe Premiere 6.0 and feel comfortable in it, but are there better programs to use? I don’t have a Mac nor the money for a G5, so FCP is out of the question.

Is anyone else in this situation? I’ve been a writer all of my life. It was actually suggested to me that I go to grad school to get my MFA in creative writing. I was thinking about it, but am leaning more towards film school now. On the other hand, I’ve had professors tell me that I should get into drama due to my acting in plays I’ve written for classes. Then on the other hand, people are telling me to pursuer video editing. And I also love taking urban b&w photography and organizing scenery into stories. To sum it up, I love all aspects of movies equally and can’t decide on which aspect I would like to focus on. I’m working on a script right now from a story I’ve been throwing together for a few years now. I can’t decide if I want to act in the movie or not, though, and if so, do I want to be a main character or a bit character? Being the bit character would allow me more time behind the camera to see the big picture of the scene, but being a main character would allow me to act as well, something I really enjoy doing, too.

I’m already gathering permission rights from bands across the nation to possibly use in this movie. From what I’ve learned from playing shows and touring during the past 6 years while being in a band, I had an idea of taking this movie to colleges around the state (Louisiana) and connecting states and showing it in auditoriums for students (free admission). Outside, a merchandise table can be set up to sell DVDs and any other various movie stuff that might make people remember your movie better. Does anyone ever do this with his or her films, or is it even something commonly done?

Anyway, sorry for rattling on for so long. My production crew is really just… me… right now. There are not a lot of people involved in stuff like this, from what I can tell so far, around here. In time, I would love to bring in more people who are specialized in certain aspects of movie making, but until then, it feels like a one man show. Oh well, it’s just kind of fun to finally find something where all of your interests can be intertwined into one project. Take care…

Greets!

A) Get Vegas to edit on...Premier will not properly handle the 24p footage. And Vegas rules anyway. I too knew premier until I got this camera and needed something that could handle the 24p video, and now I cannot see how I ever got along without this awesome piece of software.

B) It sounds like the real problem is listening to other people too much. 70% of what you were saying was "and some people tell me to..." I say do what you really feel you want to do. And you KNOW what that is...whatever that is.

You will have a blast making movies with the DVX. I say act in em. Major AND bit parts. Thats what the remote control is for! Really...have fun with the thing! And welcome, to say the least! This can be a really fun place and you can learn a lot just reading the old threads.

Welcome, Andy ! :D

A lot of people here are all hyped up about Vegas (right Daniel ? ;)), but you should take a look at the "Which NLE you recommend" thread in the "Latest DVX News/Articles" section.

If you've only used Premiere 6.0 or 6.5, you will probably find that Vegas 4 is a lot better, but after reading that thread, I've decided to at least postpone the move I was contemplating and to stick to Premiere Pro for the time being.

IMHO, school is primarily good for two things:
1)Trying to figure out what you want to do
2)Learning how to do what you want to do

As it already seems as if you know what you want to do, number one (1) is out of the picture. As for reason two (2), in film/tv/and the like, there are some other places outside of academia that might provide a better environment for learning the necessary skills (i.e. local tv stations, film/audio/animation studios, film sets, etc.). From what it sounds like, you're getting a lot of direction on what to do from academics (professors and the like), so obviously, they're going to give you advice that closely relates to what they do.

A suggestion, find some people who are doing what you want to do. Hey you've already done that by coming to DVXUser! Awsome first step! :) Now, milk them for all the information they've got, use that info to become famous, and leave them in the dust! That's what I...er....I mean you should do.

...

At any rate, as for other solutions for editing, I too, would throw in my vote for Vegas. I come from an FCP/Avid background (if that really means anything), and I think Vegas is really a top notch NLE, which surprisingly gets little respect from the "industry" (or rather from those who think having the "right" NLE is what makes you pro).

I am completely of the opinion, that "it's not the paintbrush that made the masterpiece", so to speak. So if you feel you are proficient on Premier, while it may not be the "best" or most efficient piece of software out there, you might do well to stay on using it. However, I also believe that a better tool can only aid the craftsman in making something better and faster. Fortunately, you appear ready and willing to learn new things, so definitely try the other programs out! :)

As for Vegas, you can get a free, fully functional, 30 day trial from Sony's website (link)

You really don't have much to lose by trying it out :)

BTW, welcome to DVXUser!
