Enhanced EOS HD Video – New Compressions, Longer Recording

Centered around an all-new full-frame CMOS sensor with larger pixels than those found on the EOS 5D Mark II image sensor, the EOS-1D X utilizes new HD video formats to simplify and speed up post-production work. The two new compression formats offered on the EOS-1D X include intraframe (ALL-i ) compression for an editing-friendly format and interframe (IPB) compression for superior data compression, giving professionals the options they need for their ideal workflow. Answering the requests of cinematographers and filmmakers, the EOS-1D X includes two methods of SMPTE-compliant timecode embedding, Rec Run and Free Run, allowing multiple cameras or separate sound recording to be synced together in post production.

Canon’s all new full-frame CMOS sensor ensures that video footage captured on the EOS-1D X will exhibit less moiré than any previous Canon model, resulting in a significant improvement in HD video quality. A desired feature for many documentary filmmakers using Canon DSLRs was to enable recording beyond the four gigabyte (GB) file capacity and the EOS-1D X is the answer. The new camera features automatic splitting of movie files when a single file exceeds 4GB. The new file splitting function allows for continuous video recording up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds across multiple 4GB files; no frames are dropped and the multiple files can be seamlessly connected in post production, providing filmmakers the recording time they want in the same convenient DSLR form factor. The camera records Full HD at 1920 x 1080 in selectable frame rates of 24p (23.976), 25p, or 30p (29.97); and 720p HD or SD video recording at either 50p or 60p (59.94). SD video can be recorded in either NTSC or PAL standards.

The Canon EOS-1D X also includes manual audio level control, adjustable both before and during movie recording, an automatic setting, or it can be turned off entirely. A wind filter is also included. Sound can be recorded either through the internal monaural microphone or via an optional external microphone through the stereo mic input.

Thanks.

Read some articles all over the web... obviously questions will stand unanswered till we get to see the camera in action. But seriously, still 60 fps in 720p. Still using a mirror (though thats too be expected, Canon is rather conservative in this regard). I wonder if it will be using their new MPEG2 based codec or if we'll be getting the same old crappy H.264 with those compression options. Should be full HD out during recording, with the new processor.

It is clear this is aimed squarely at still image shooters... hopefully with some nice video features thrown in.

Yes, that's 204800 ISO available.

LCD panel looks fixed.

Yeah, I wonder how usable those incredibly high ISOs will be. Canon isn't notorious for providing the clearest images at very high ISOs.

great to see that they are addressing the needs of the video dslr shooters

and this is a good indication of what will roll out on a 7d2, 5d3, 70d, t4i

but tis still not quite there, I'd like to see

• hd-sdi out so we can do 10 bit recording on a SD PIX240
• line level in so we can work with a mixer

The intra codec seems to be 350 mbit per second, that is much more than the pix 240 bitrate. So perhaps it will make external recorders unnecessary. If it has good way to record the audio, we would just need a good preamp mixer and be able to feed it into the cam.

Guys, I seriously suggest you click on the video on this page. At the beginning you'll probably say: "Artsy fartsy video, nothing special". You'~~probably complain about the noisy picture, and some color banding artifacts. However, wait until the very end and see how this was shot, and get ready to see your jaw drop on the floor... I need one of these! :)

I don't get it. What are you so excited about? Is one of the automatic photo lenses (who cares?) they list at the end new or something?

What am I missing here? I want my jaw to drop...

EDIT: Ah ha! The ISO's.

I think he was talking about the iso/noise thing... That is awesome! Very high iso with very low noise, it seems...

H.264 (aka MPEG4) is better than MPEG2. Aliasing and moire kill compression efficiency on the DSLRs so improving that will improve compression quality, plus the 1D X's bitrate sounds pretty incredible (plus intraframe!).

Sorry, I must be being a bit thick today, but where are you guys getting the figures for bit-rate?
When I went to the Canon site their technical pages were "not found"
Dave

OK, I've got it now, 16 GB/6 min = 355 mb/s

Allowing for roundings etc this could be the AVC-Ultra 400 codec in which case no way will it be 4:2:0, more like 4:4:4

If this is what Canon have done with a DSLR, whatinhell are they planning for their real video camera :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Wishing I had the dosh,

Dave
