The NEW AF-100 Focus Assist option...

With a title like this, who wouldn't check out this post!

After Barry Green's tip (thanks BTW) to use a small LED flashlight to help aid the peaking & Focus in Red assist I have been getting MUCH better results. However, 99% of the time I am a 1 man crew and it is quite awkward to point a flashlight and set focus at the same time- so here is my "RoRo-rigged" focus assist to assist the focus assist.

Gaff tape option is my own custom option :)

Hey, glad you're finding that tip useful! I found it to be very helpful as well, and yeah, that's a pretty good usage of the front shoe.

Where is the actual "tip"? I'd love to read about it...

Nevermind... found it!

B) keep a little flashlight with you and reflect it off your subject's eyes. That will give a nice pinpoint that the red focus assist will latch onto and will assure you of getting pinpoint perfect focus.

Thanks Barry!

Right -- the idea is that if you're shooting in a scenario where there are only soft edges and the focus-in-red isn't able to "latch onto" any high-contrast edges, then the red won't show up. So if you use a little maglight or other little flashlight, you can create a hotspot that the focus-in-red will latch onto and you can then focus perfectly.

It's a Panavise cold shoe to 1/4 20 mount. Right now I just gaff tape the LED on it, but I am going to thread it for 1/4 20. Works very well for aiding the FIR, just looks kinda janky :)

This is a trifling question, but what eyecup cover is that? I have yet to find one big enough to properly fit the HVX/AF eyepiece...

I buy these in bulk. They are made by a company called Blue Star. I always had one on my HVX and HPX's, as I filmed alot of wakeboarding. Great for sweating eyes!!!And just comfortable. The AF uses the same eye piece, so it was natural for me to put one here as well.

Which model/size and from where?

Hey Barry, only asking because I'm curious, why did Panasonic go with the Peaking FA and not the Zoom FA option? I much rathered that.

Thanks

Barry, I wish there was a LIKE button.

Ed, you obviously work for Panasonic : ) ! Kiddin'.

I don't think having both options would've been much of a stretch.

It was an impossibility to have both options in the hardware that was in the AF100 (same situation in the AC130/AC160). In the "A" version of all these cameras, they have resolved that; the AF100A/AC130A/AC160A all have focus-in-red and also magnified focus assist.
