Hi,

I wanted to see the differens betweene uncompressed and avchd.
Not just a little I wanted to taste it and so I did:

I did what I hade to do, I made a race in witch both would fail to see witch failed the most.

I recorded Blackmagic uncompressed over intensity pro.
Exposed for the exterior witch left the inside room grossly underexposed.

I decided to expand the dynamic range as the test.

I used this filters:
Neat Video 64bit Reduce Noise - Defult filter and sharpen
Levels mid 1.75
Saturation 137

Uncompressed doesn't look good but I could sell if I needed to.
AVCHD looks plain bad.

maybe also do a stress test on the codec. the uncompressed would probably be better in grading (albeit still suffer from banding/polarizing)

This is hugely useful information and thank you for sharing it. I will try to explore some of these techniques but my challenges usually involve some light. It's the transition to shadow from well exposed skin tones, or something that shows the banding that is supposed to be a function of the codec that would get me to buy an outboard recorder.

Are you getting banding on a skin tone? !

No, I wasn't clear. Here's a screen grab from a recent test for an upcoming short. What I meant to say is I will get that banding sometimes when I expose for good exposure on the subject but I want the light to fall off on the walls, etc. There the banding can really jump in on the walls, floor, in those transition areas. Not on the face. In this frame, I like the way the light transitions into darkness, without that banding on that back wall. I've had that creep in and I wonder if to an outboard recorder can help with that.

I did another test and this with stress to.

So I compared B.press and Cine D

I did the same thing as last time exept for the cine D witch I corrected the luma curves so it would match B.press.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't CineD look smoother and less grainy (uncomp) and artifacty (in compressed)
the CineD test? Look at the mailbox in the door.
