The Major Differences...

So i was just wondering...

what is the main difference between final cut pro and express? Is it like night and day or can you fend well with express?

Also I know final cut express is available as it self but can you only get pro with final cut studio?

FCE is limited to DV and HDV.

FCS2 is scalable. It will handle just about everything you throw at it as an editing format.

Beyond that, it is a complete editing suite. Color alone is worth the $1299.00 USD price.

For the longest while because I had AfterEffects, I chose to use FCE for 'splicing and dicing' of DV. However, I now seem to be tending to want other things that are in the FC Pro bundle, like the DVD authoring stuff, so I may buy the package.

As mentioned above, FCE does not do non DV formats, it doesn't do 3:2 pulldown removal etc, for those who like to do 24p(a), etc. The DVX 100 24p(a) output is editable as 29.97 standard DV, but that's it.

It has been SO LONG since I did anything in FCE, but I seem to remember that it was also severely limited as far as plug-ins go, too.

Thanks all! That was helpful. I'm looking to learn more about editing and had just started with FCE and just needed some information. Any other advice for FCE?

Isn't there a limit to video and audio tracks as well. That would drive me nuts more than anything.

i use FCE cuz i can't afford to get FCP yet.. actually i have to upgrade my ram before i can get it so i REALLY can't afford it.

i do well with FCE. but so far i wish I could do the following things : color corrector 3 way (FCE only has color corrector, big difference), FCE does NOT have multi cam editing which makes doing music videos much more time consuming for me, and... well that's all i can think of now.

i just woke up. anyways i'd say FCE is very good but if you can afford it, get final cut studio. you're gonna be getting all those other programs like compressor (wish i had that), color, dvd studio pro, livetype, motion (want that too)... if you get FCE you will eventually want to upgrade so why not start with the best..

k good luck.

What type of advice are you looking for?
Yea that was a little vague wasn't it. I guess whats the best way to go about learning it? I'm a guess and learn kinda guy. I just mess around till it starts to make sense. And is there any thing i should know that just sorta sticks out like "Man i wish i knew that when i started" kinda stuff?

final cut is such a massive program it's hard to give advice on what to learn to first. my advice is to practice by making lots of little videos and experimenting with different things. i taught myself the program but it's taken a year to get to the point where i feel i have strong understanding of how it works. i made about a video a week, at least, and anytime i couldnt figure out how to do something, i googled it.

i also recommend searching for 'emeek77' on youtube. he posts TONS of video tutorials on FCE and FCP on YouTube. it's free, and very informative...
