Hi all. The LimbSalesman, a feature length film shot on the original DVX 100, had it's premiere last night at the Toronto International Film Festival last night (Sunday, Sept. 12/04). It's a dark, sci-fi, dystopian fairy tale tragic love story. I worked on it as a props master, and as an actor (I am one of the identical twin male 'maids' in the film). We had a blast making it, but the main thing of interest for all you folks here is how it looked blown up on the big screen. It rocked! I was astonished. I have seen my fair share of DV features on the big screen, and they always seem soft and mushy. This didn't! I could not believe what I was seeing. Granted, it wasn't displayed in some huge screen theater, but all the same, it looked great. Easily 90% looked like it could have originated on 16mm. I am not shitting you. Before I went in, I joked with the Production Designer to not be disappointed, because DV to 35mm can look rough. Then the lights dimmed, the movie started playing, and I had to continually pick my jaw off the floor. The DP did an ace job. His name is D. Gregor Hagey. His work, along with the production designer Diana Abbatangelo was so fantastic(the right choice of colours is sooo important for a good dv to film look). It was shot in regular 24p mode (not the 24p Advanced mode), posted on an Avid I believe, and blown up to 35mm at SOHO digital. Sorry I ran off at the mouth here but it was so great to see and really shows what can be done with the little old DVX in the hands of a talented DP. Here is the website:
