The Lense Click Dilemma

I read here (http://d90movie.blogspot.com/) that you can stop turning your lense just before it clicks to control aperture manually. I tried it and it worked great.

Is it possible to damage the lense or the camera when you do this?

The lense is stable, but something makes me doubt this procedure.

I've never heard of the trick, but if it works, I doubt it will damage anything. I can see it being easy to loosen and drop the lens when pulling focus or iris, and with a manual iris lens, there being no way to prevent this using camera tape (without restricting the iris ring).

So be careful about that, don't force anything and make sure the lens is really almost mounted (and not just barely hanging on) and you should be fine.

I've done this before with older glass, don't see why it would hurt the lens. I know though when pulling focus I got some more image shift than usual since it wasn't securely locked in like intended. If this is something you're really interested, the guys at Duclos lenses will actually de-click your lenses for you as well as pre gear them and install an 80mm front ring on all of them for ease of use with your mattebox. We have had this done to all of our lenses in rentals and there great!
