Hey guys! We are still busy in post with EXIT 101 but I've been researching for my next feature film whenever I get a free moment. I've decided to go ahead and officially put it into pre production as the script is being written and such. This film is still going to be sticking with the horror genre but will be a far cry from the more comedic and campy nature of "EXIT 101". This film will also be based on a local urban legend, and we are actually in negotiations with the owner of the actual place this supposedly took place in. I originally planned to shoot my 2nd film (budget pending) on the RED 0NE, but if that doesn't work out I'll be using my Canon T2i. We've already got a small investor interested, but we'd need more to be able to go the RED route. I plan to do alot of things differently this go round, to speed up production and to make for a better end result. Here's the synopsis:

Synopsis:

The Spirit of a tortured Native American woman returns to haunt the location where she in turn tortured and murdered 7 corrupt businessmen, cutting off each of their big toes and wearing them on a necklace as her trophy.

Preproduction has finally started! I'm currently working on the script. You can find more information at the movie's production blog. But for your convenience I will copy each excerpt into this thread.

Preproduction Underway!

Hey guys! Been a while since many of you who followed our other film "EXIT 101" saw one of these posts! I'm proud to announce that preproduction for Blackflight Studios' 2nd feature length Independent Horror film has begun. Currently I'm writing the first draft of the script as we speak and its coming along nicely so far. I'd like to take the opportunity with this very first post to explain some about the story, how we plan to shoot this film, and what will be different about this film vs. our last. We learned alot the last go round and we are going to use those things to improve this film tenfold in every aspect of the production. First things first though.. What IS The Legend of Seven Toe Maggie?

Well, for those who live in our area you probably have heard at least one of the many variations of the story. As is common with myths and urban legends, depending on who you ask you'll get a different version of what really took place. Many of you may even have gone to the "real" location. Since there is really no way to know what is "Accurate" and what isn't in an urban legend. We decided to take an approach that would touch on the key points of what most people know as the "story" but add in some other elements to make it alot more interesting, and ALOT scarier. Most people can all agree on the part of the story revolving around walking around a church, seven times and the spirit of Seven Toe Maggie appearing, and bad things happening. I don't want to give away too much too early, but I will say that we are taking an approach to this film that I think will be very interesting. We want to take the "reality show" aspects of films like Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity and mesh them together with a traditional theatrical horror film. We want this movie to be extremely "scary". Hopefully we can accomplish that task.

Next on the agenda! Shooting! EXIT 101 took nearly 25 days of shooting and we did it entirely on weekends. We'd like to continue with that same agenda, but streamline the process a bit and make things go a bit faster than they did for EXIT 101. We think that with this story we will have an easier time shooting faster, but maintaining a better end product. We will still be utilizing mostly volunteer crew for Seven Toe Maggie, but we hope to bring in a few key professionals to make this the best film it can be. We will be shooting on (as of now) One Canon T2i, and if the funds are there possibly an additional camera. DSLR cameras have changed the independent film making industry forever. We want to use high quality lenses to get the highest cinematic quality possible.

Lastly, whats different about this film vs. EXIT 101? Well first off, EXIT 101 was a complete throwback to the corny horror movies of the 80s. It has a definite "comedic" side to it, where as I would like Seven Toe Maggie to have a "dark" and eerie edge and be a truly terrifying experience. Sound design will play a huge part in making that happen as well as the casting and locations. Even though this is a "movie" we want you to still have the sense that this could be "Real". I will keep this updated as we progress, so keep checking back! Thanks for supporting our film endeavors!

Your synopsis isn't a synopsis. It is more of a logline and I found it confusing.

When you say she was tortured, do you mean when she was alive or is her spirit tortured because of how she died?
Since you are using the past tense I'm not sure if she tortured these businessmen when she was alive or after becoming a ghost but not the current time of the film.

Sorry for the late response.

"Maggie" was tortured by these businessmen when she was alive. She escaped, and lured them back to this same location where she in turn tortured them (still alive at this point). Because these men were considered "upstanding" members of the community but everyone but those who really knew what kind of people they were, the townsfolk set out on a "witchhunt" and wound up burning "Maggie" at the stake. Her spirit is what still haunts the land where all this took place many years later.

Update:

We are shooting a small teaser scene for the movie, for crowd funding purposes this Saturday. We will be shooting on a T2i, T3i and 7D. A friend of mine from Atlanta who helped with the popular "Cardboard Warfare" web video, is coming down to help out for this shoot.

T
he teaser will set the tone and style for the film and is to also show several potential investors.

no not at all..

I would like to ask what made you think that though, if its confusing. Maybe some changes are in order.

The actual "ghosts" name is called "seven toe maggie" because she only has 7 toes, and wears the toes of 7 men around her neck. She's an indian woman, so she's into the native american magic and stuff. Its meant to be fairly serious. Despite the funny name. I thought about shortening it to "Maggie" for that reason.

I guess it depends on how you design the necklace, etc. but upon my first read "Seven Toe Maggie" sounds like something Adam Sandler would talk about. Maybe its just me.

Right, so it was the title that through you off.

The name comes from a location, called "Seven Toe Church" its a real location. So, thats why she is named "Seven Toe Maggie". I think the visuals will help sell it.

I think any misconceptions based off the title will be gone within 30 seconds once the tone is set. It is a good title, interesting enough to attract casual hits.

Furthermore you could have the characters make a joke of the name upfront for a nice bit of laugh then scare juxtaposition. BTW that is a seriously impressive wound on her ankle there.

Thanks guys!

@Nathyn - Yeah I don't intend to change it now. I think its more memorable the way it is. If I shortened it as someone had suggested to me, it would be too generic. I think the fact that its sort of a strange sounding name will make more people go "hmm.. whats this about?" and make them want to see it more just out of curiosity.

@Egg - Thanks, I did that with a little bit of scar wax. Turned out pretty nice. The Actresss was even creeped out by how real it looked.

Happy New Year!

Check out this teaser scene we shot and made into sort of a trailer thing. Its shot on the 7d and T3i, its more of a camera test to see how things might look. I didn't like how dark some of it was, and we had to shoot at some fairly high ISO's so I know more lighting is gonna be a must for the real shoot. Incidently most of the actual movie will be shot indoors and not outdoors, but I figured for this test.. I wanted to go with the harshest scenario in terms of difficult lighting. The other change, is that the actual movie is going to be shot on a GH2 lol.

Kinda confused how she rips up her foot and why she plugs her nose before she falls and "chirps". That kind of fall couldn't do that damage. Honestly gotta say that actress (assuming she's not just part of the teaser) really needs a lot of work.
