I said goodbye to my second HPX500, but it left with a bang. I was asked to DP a Hitchcock remake... Before they even told me which one I already said yes. The film was "Rope".
It is one of the more technically difficult films to shoot because originally Hitchcock shot it without any edits, once the camera rolled out, that was it. They would end the scene on someones back, reload the camera and then start up from pulling away from the persons back so it was one continuous movie.
We however did not shoot it that way, but had our own challenges. We had 2 weeks to build the set, light the set, and shoot the entire feature film. The actors rehearsed for months and played it out just like the original, more like a play and less like a movie. We had lonnng takes.
The script was 110 pages, and in 1 day alone we shot from page 25 to 64! yes that many pages we shot in one day. Its a heavy dialog driven film.
I designed the lighting to have and older look to it, as a throw back, as well as the angles. The set design is retro and I think it really worked well.
The shoot was for 2 RED One's but I actually shot some B-Cam footage with my HPX500 before we got the second RED One in. I was afraid it was going to be so different from the REDs but in post it honestly cut together quite well. With the RED cameras we shot a lot at 2k, 3k, and some times 4k... This helped with the HPX500's limited "2k" (1080p) dof.
I wanted the lighting to be non-intrusive, I really didn't want any stands on the floor, but ultimately we had to have a few lights for key scenes on the floor. I drew up a lighting scheme for the grid up top, and let the gaffer go to work. I feel it really matched what they did on the original set. I didn't want to go for the original time though I wanted it to feel slightly 60's without it being retro, though the costumes made it more modern. I think overall it was a nice mix and everything in dailies looked great. I have some amazing shots on the RED's but since this is the hpx500 room i'll only be posting some tiny footage of the hpx instead of RED.
