The Last Airbender - Summer 2010

OMFG i love avatar
best thing nick has ever made
i cant wait for this to come out
the trailer with its cgi is amazing
summer 2010 here i come !!!

I've only seen bits and pieces of the show, a snippet here, a snippet there, but what I've seen was all pretty neat.

So... I don't really know much about the show, but the trailer for the live action film has me interested. It has a nice epic feel to it. I'm also curious to see how they do the marital arts stuff in the live action film. From the few scenes of the show I've seen, there were some crazy anime style fight scenes, basically martial arts mixed with supernatural powers. It is also great to see an Eastern-inspired fantasy flick, since most of them are more Western-centric in style (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Eragon).

I'm also a fan of M Night Shyamalan's previous work, so it will be fun to see how he approaches something epic in scope and more action oriented than his past suspense films. Let's just hope this thread can stay civil and not devolve into a constant stream of M Night Shymalongadingdong is a [insert expletive here].

I got hooked on the Cartoon when my Daughter started watching it. And now I have seen every single episode. The trailer looks good and I will be there opening night for this one. I really want to see how M Knight handles it.

i just hope this film wont be a failure like dragon ball
the cartoon was fun and they had to go ruining it with bad acting bad storyline and not much action at all

I read an interview where M Night said that is the exact same way that he got into the show too, his daughter was a huge fan and he decided to take a look just to see what all the fuss was about and became hooked as well.

I'm tempted to rent the animated series. I've always like anime, not fantatically, but I'd place a couple of anime features in my top ten favorite films list.

So is the show squarely aimed at kids or is there enough to keep my interest (for example: I'm into darker adult anime like Ghost in the Shell and Vampire Hunter D)?

In the midst of Drake and Josh, iCarly (ok, I'm hooked on her too), Spongebob, Chowder (am I mixing networks?)... I was happy for the boys watching Airbender. Was something we all could look forward to doing together. Yes, there were some GREAT lessons taught, plus some really cool fight scenes.

I wouldn't call this Anime... not in the traditional sense -- or maybe I just don't know enough about the genre. The story arc of the brother and sister... of Zuko... and of Ang himself is epic -- epic as in Homer. Kids enjoyed the fighting, I enjoyed the lessons.

We own the three seasons from iTunes.

Check it out there. 720p baby!!

its really entertaining and appeals to elementary and many high school kids
i know a few adults who have seen the show and liked it themselves
so u should rent it out season 1, watch it, and if u like it just rent all the other seasons
cus u wont be able to stop xD

Im 31 and I is a big fan , I got my nieces and nephews to watch it for crying out loud.
I prey they dont screw this one up !

Sorry, no offense to anyone, just clarifying: this is not Anime. The show has american writers and producers and I think it's animated in like.. Taiwan. That's not to detract from these same American writers and producers finally getting the hint on what animated content CAN be... see real anime like: Gurren Lagaan, Soul eater, Fullmetal Alchemist, Eureka 7 so-on-and-so forth... just haev a really hard time swallowing the "Airbend is Anime" pill.

By definition and by production, it's an American Cartoon. Again, glad that it's opening doors for real animated content with storylines that continue throughout the series, less about bashing cute animals in the head with spiked bats, etc.

No matter what M. Night does on this movie, it's another step for those of us who were inspired and learned from storytellers who's mediums were originally cel and (further back than most realize in animation) polygonal based. Just like video game adaptations have become one of the standards regardless of how very very bad (yet mildly entertaining) the early ones were (cough, Double Dragon and Super Mario Brothers, I'm talking about you) it bodes very well for better writers and great directors to latch onto IP's like those Anime's mentioned above...

Evangelion... here's hoping.

I guess I never saw this cartoon.

But are you telling me his super-power is making wind?

Superhero like that would need a sidekick. Or at least a dog to blame it on.

You're right, it isn't technically anime, but from the few bits I saw of Avatar it definitely gave off an anime-like vibe. It wasn't so much the way it was drawn but the way the action was choreographed that gave it that quality. My guess would be that the animators and writers were inspired or influenced by Japanese anime?

I also mentioned anime because as you said, there are not many if any American originated animated shows or films that compare to the way anime approaches story in a more deeply mature and serious way. Its too bad really. There have been a few American or American/Japanese collaborations like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, The Animatrix, and the Spawn animated series which was actually good while the live action film was definitely not. Also, there was an interesting animated sci-fi film from France a few years ago called Renaissance that was mature but approached the visuals in a very different style than the Japanese do.

Evangelion... here's hoping.

That could be a good one for live action, but I'm really hoping for Vampire Hunter D to get the big budget Hollywood treatment.

So what you guys are basicly saying is that if a white guys sings reggae it's technically not reggae ....right !

Avatar is animated by korean animators

Personally I think it doesnt feel like "traditional boring forever taking long shots anime" .Which for those who may not know was orginally done to cut cost. Longshots with the same drawing and a very long Voice over - narration.
The animations in avatar goes in to great detail and so does the dialogue.
Another thing I havent seen in other cartoons is that the main characters are actually getting older.
Not that they aged very much in avatar but you do get a sense of time .Ang's hair growing.
If it was anything like "traditonal anime " I dont think it would be so succesfull in the west. But then again Samurai X is pretty cool though.

:)

yeah I got that , took me a while but when I got it ,it brought back old memories.....

Before Squaresoft became Square-Enix, Spirits Within was put out. It's the project that pretty much wrecked Square financially. Note, that it wasn't created in American waters, but in Square-Asia's departments. The only thing American was the distribution and VO's.

The Animatrix was animated by some of the best animators in Japan and China. Most of which are staples in the Japanese Animation communities. Again, the only thing that was done in America was licensing and VO's. There weren't any American Writers on it, which is why the storylines only make sense four or five times in. Spawn was also animated outside of those territories, but still had decent animation.

Anime, in a technical sense, qualifies as Japanese Animation. I'm okay with "inspired-by", it's a personal issue though and I prolly shouldn't have posted. LoL. The Last Airbender is a great step forward, still shoddily animated in comparison to properties that are ten years older than itself. It still serves it's purpose as a gateway though.

Boy. D. Now that's old. But dope.

Avatar is animated by korean animators

Korean or Taiwan, it's still the same people who animate THE SIMPSONS... Has nothin to do with race or nationality, Anime just isn't American. You can easily spot Cartoon from Anime. And Avatar is Cartoon . That's cool, nothing bad about that, just saying.

Personally I think it doesnt feel like "traditional boring forever taking long shots anime" .Which for those who may not know was orginally done to cut cost. Longshots with the same drawing and a very long Voice over - narration.

You must not watch a lot of anime. It's quite easy to hit youTube and show you a simple fight scene in an anime that outclasses the entire series animation of avatar.

The animations in avatar goes in to great detail and so does the dialogue.

Samurai X is probably the worst example of Anime to date. Again, I'm not sure what "traditional anime" you're talking about other than circa 1970, it's gone far beyond that since late-to-early 80's - 90's.

As far as Cartoons go, well yeah... that's because Cartoons are generally American made and don't have one unique storyline to tie every episode together. Teen Titans is a light exception to this, please see SLADE chronicles.

But as far as ANIME goes, which isn't "Cartoons", there are several, and I do mean several, series that see main characters age and even switch poles (bad guy, good guy, antagonists to protagonists). Of the most recent Naruto and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan, which probably is licensed by Bandai or someone by now given the immense popularity.

Anyway, just a slight pet-peeve. I grew up watching NInja the Wonder Boy and imports like Voltron (which is anime), etc etc. I'll geek elsewhere.

thanks for the update , it been a while since Voltron, .....but I dont see how samurai x is bad....
It s a pg version of ninja scroll....please geek some more :)

Sorry, you know what I thought you were talking about Samurai 7. You're talking about Kenshin. Kenshin is bad-ass.
