the knee level once again

I hate to be a bug but I have ran and ran searches and I am still confussed
I know what the knee function does, it where the camera clips the whites and its automatically disbled with the cine gamas, but I know a lot of people that shot b-press and I wonder what is the proper setting for knee? I always leave it on auto is that a bad way to go?

Depends on a number of factors probably, including the desired effect and the amount of natural (and even artificial) light. Not sure there's a right or wrong answer here, but always leaving it on auto likely does not give you optimum results in all situations.

To quote Alfonso Parra in his paper Test on the Panasonc HVX 200 camera:

The knee value marks the starting point for white compression. The camera allows for the knee value to be put on automatic or manual in LOW, MID and HIGH values.

Modifying the knee lets you capture more detail in high lights and protecting them from overexposure.

However, care must be taken not to put the knee value too low as this may produce very artificial grayish whites. With the knee in LOW, the lessening of the signal begins at 80%. With the value in MID at 90% and in HIGH the Knee does not affect the signal until it exceeds 100% and up to a maximum value of 109%. Set at automatic, the camera decides what value to apply.

With the Cinelike Gamma curves, the knee goes on automatic, allowing it to capture greater detail in high lights.
