I may be in a minority here but I'm not sure I understand the anti-Leno campaign. Whether you like Leno or Conan, this is not something that they are doing to each other. This is about money, ratings and a desire to continue doing something you love to do.
The execs and Leno agreed to hand the show off to Conan years ago. They did that. Leno didn't really want to leave so they gave him a new time slot which was killing the affiliates. But, he did leave as promised. However, you can't blame Leno for wanting to continue doing what he loves. And, It's absolutely RIDICULOUS for anyone to begrudge someone for wanting to continue working and to continue doing what they love to do.
But, what's complicating things is that Conan's brand of humor isn't resonating with his new time slot. Now, I LOVE Conan. So, one could argue that if he is given more time the new crowd will catch on. This is what I was personally hoping would happen. However, no-one knows if the ratings will ever climb and at the end of the day he isn't owed anything. They don't have to wait for anything. So, you have a situation where they are scrambling around to get those numbers back up to the pre-Conan era A.S.A.P. and the quickest way to do that would be to ask Leno to resume his old time slot. Does it seem fair? No. Is it fair? Absolutely. This is a business with millions of dollars riding on a single ratings point. Many companies operate this way.
Put yourself in the same position. You are a big time player in a company doing a job you love and can't wait to get to work every morning. You promise to turn over your C.E.O. position to a young talented hot shot in 5 years. You do this and proceed to take a position on the board. However, the young talented, likable hot shot isn't getting the numbers so the board asks you to come back to the job you absolutely loved. Can you really be faulted for that? If Leno walks away and Conan gets replaced they both lose. It's absurd to pit this all on Leno. And, believe me, I love Conan. I was and am rooting for him. I just think the whole perception that Leno is responsible for all of this is silly. There are many more factors to consider.
I'm sure I am in a HUGE minority on this...
