The Japanese GH1A vs GH1

I've trawled the forums and haven't been able to find this addressed yet.

I'm considering getting this camera:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=463376736&pf_rd_i=489986

(it's in japanese, sorry).

It's the GH1A-K; I can't seem to figure out what this model is, compared to a vanilla GH1-K.

I read elsewhere that the "A" may refer to the colour being blue, although AFAIK the GH1s were only released on black, gold or red.

I'm in the process of finding out the serial numbers, but can anyone tell me if the GH1A is hackable? Is it just the Japanese model number of the GH1?

I think in "GH1A-K" the A designates that it comes with a kit lens (14-45mm) and the "-K" means it's a black body. "GH1-K" without the A says it's black body only.

I thought the "K" designated that it came with a kit lens. Although "black" in Japanese is "kuro" so that might make sense.

But isn't it normally GH1K? Would I be correct in assuming that this model is hackable (provided it has S/N before June 2010)?

Yes, K means the 14-140mm kit lens but there's also the 14-45mm kit lens, A. It depends where the K is, like GH1K-K would be a black GH1 with a 14-140mm kit lens, GH1A-R is a red one with a 14-45mm kit lens, and a GH1A-K would be a black one with the 14-45mm kit lens.

You can search the forum for serials, firmware numbers, and dates to see if it's hackable. Here's a start for you: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?206-GH13-The-GH1-Firmware-Hack

Great, thanks for your help mate. The next step is coercing my friend in japan to call up these places to inquire about the serial numbers!

Good luck! You pretty much need to find "new, old stock" (new camera that's been sitting around) to get a hackable one at this late date. Still possible though. I so wanted a red GH1 when they first came out and was upset that the U.S. only got black ones. BTW, GH1A-N is a gold one with a 14-45mm kit lens.
