I have a Dell desktop that I currently use, but I am told that MAC is the way to go. What type of software and hardware do you all use and what do you think is the best?

Just get CS5 and a compatible Nvidia CUDA card. There is a new version of FCP coming out soon so I would wait on going the mac route until then. Ultimately it all comes down to how much you want to spend on the system. I love and hate mac's, generally they are good for what you get, but their prices are usually pretty inflated. Mac's biggest selling point in my eyes is there user friendly OS (a unix variant). You can build a computer with similar or better specs for 1/4 of the cost in the windows 7 environment and be just as happy IMO.

FCP's biggest selling point is the Apple Pro Res codec. You can transcode and put files on your timeline with real time playback and a better color space (4:2:2 instead of 4:2:0). Right now you can stream most media formats without the need to transcode in CS5. This is pretty cool but there are benefits to converting your files to a 4:2:2 color space if you plan on doing color work.

If you are a student you can get discounts on Mac's through your university or school as well as discounts on a lot of software like CS5. Be sure to check that out before purchasing.

Macs have good stuff. The problem is that I already invested a ton of money into my studio XPS 9000. So a Mac is not in the cards.
I have been looking at getting CS5 for awhile.

Foster Im on Mac Pro's here - but even so I wouldnt give you a blanket statement of Mac is the way to go. Especially since you already have a windows machine that still has some life. I agree with Aaron, my first port would be to check out CS5 and see if you like it, add a CUDA card to your system.

I have FCS and CS5 suite on my system here. I like both for different reasons. Download some trials though and have a play and see what fits you better.
