The HVX200 "look"

I was wondering if there is anyone in here who regrets selling their HVX?

I surely do.. There is something about that camera that gives the footage a daydream sort of look. Or perhaps it was just the way I handled it. But I have seen others achieve the hvx200 look that Im fond of.

DSLR or camcorders like the Canon XF300 are NOT the same.

Do other people feel the same?

I agree that the DVX and HVX have a great look to them. It's that Panasonic Mojo that existed on Panny CCD cameras. Sadly, I didn't see the same look carry over to their CMOS cameras like the AF-100 etc. I still have two HVX's that I use for event work and interviews, etc. But since I've gone RED, I'm having a hard time working with the HVX. I can really see how muddy and low res they are. They look like SD to me. I'm pretty sure I will be upgrading these very soon. Maybe PX-270. Would be great to get something with a 4k mode, but I'm not a fan of Sony camcorders. Most of my output is 1080p so not too big of a deal. I just need something with better resolution.

Sold mine earlier this year. It was time, it just wasn't bringing in work and was specifically nixed from several jobs.. that, and a client gave me an HMC150 which interplayed better with my AF100 and was better suited to event-type jobs to which my HVX had been relegated.

I own the successor the the HVX200 which is the HPX170. I have always had difficulty adjusting the camera away from its tendency towards a warm/redish cast. On the other hand in many instances the "look" can be quite pleasing.

"But since I've gone RED, I'm having a hard time working with the HVX." I never drive my pick up truck since I got the Ferrari...unless I have to bring home some sheet rock...or topsoil...or tow the boat...:)

And when you need a pickup truck nothing else will do.

I agree. I own the HMC150, and I've used the HVX200 a ton. In scenes that favour their strengths, the look is really nice.

I have a GH2 and while it's technically a superior image... I pretty much always prefer the color science of the HMC. Skin tones, reds and especially greens all look much better straight out of the camera.

On the flip side, it looks much worse in certain scenes. Anything with high contrast and blow highlights. Any wide landscape shots with details.

Still though, great cameras for the most part and very easy/fun to use.

If you run Epic footage down to a fuzzy 720p, it looks pretty comparable, too! I loved shooting on my HVX. But compared to most cameras, it felt about halfway between SD and HD. What I miss most is the non-rolling shutter.

Still use mine daily for all ordinary jobs (Have an FS700 for narrative, interview, etc). I'll bet i's paid for itself twenty times over. In the used market, the HVX200 is the perfect camera for someone who want's real video camera capabilities (including sound), doesn't need shallow depth of field a lot, and mainly produces for the web. For anything beyond that, there are now better cameras.

There have been many times with the HVX that I've gotten exterior shots that were simply magical without a lot of thought or extra work. A lot of them were shot with a circular polarizer, which I highly recommend. Use it roughly between 10am and 2pm. Then take it off , shoot a little later around magic hour, and see what you get.

i regret selling mine but I needed the cash to cover my order of blackmagic 4k which did not ship even now lol. the HVX200 orginal was my favorite camera I also sold my dvx100b and regreted it back then. These are amazing cameras the blackmagic cant even shoot 60fps the hvx200 is soft and I would never use dslr footage as the codec is so weak compared to this camera. I loved the look I got from this camera. if lite up well it can be the best damn tool in the market at its price espcialy when undercranking and overcranking. In times square nyc I saw many of thei rw are using hvx200 als news channels fo run ndgun I still see them with th hvx so I hink it till has room in the market but it is slowly but surley shall fade away. I still recommend getting on especily to those in filmschool who need o shhot shorts on a budget. u ant get any close fram rates on a dslr not to mention dslr ill ruin shots with more and rolling shuttr articfact andailiasing and so o which limits ur creativity which this camera is the best brush to pait ur paining the wa u want . If I hd the moneiwuld have never old it nd would ha retired it to it on my desk as a center piece or to u it for quick fun shots.
