Hey guys,

Im in New Zealand and today was about to purchase the HVX202 (NZ PAL Model), however over the past few days the price has apparently jumped up $2,000 for no reason that the sales assistant could think of. I see that on sites such as ebay.com they are going for much cheaper (obviously US price, but its still much cheaper than $10k NZ), but was wondering if I would have any problems with the 200 version? Such as editing on editing software here in New Zealand? I will be purchasing Final Cut Studio 5.1.

Im really annoyed that its jumped up 2k for no reason just days before I was about to purchase and am just looking for any way around it. Would you suggest I buy the 200 instead? Any other websites other than ebay.com? Is ebay reliable?

Thanks in advance

Thats great thanks for the links. Yeah by the look on the websites it might just be around 1k up, the sales guy said it was on 10k which is definetly more than I want to spend. Thanks agian

It was due to go up with the changing dollar against the greenback. To be fair to Panny they have been advertising for months that it was going to go up once the current shipment was gone.

However, 2k seems ridiculously high, the dollar hasn't moved that much. I'd shop around Alan and see what you can get.

If you are determined to go grey market and buy overseas then it should be obvious to look at european models. There is no point at all buying in NTSC model as they are not able to switch to PAL and nobody would be able to use your footage.

Id look into warranty issues carefully though.

Hey robbo,

Im living in NZ. Yeah i read a few posts about globalmediapro and i dont think im going to purchase from there.

Cheers

10 000 NZD? Be happy that you can get it so cheap. Here in Switzerland, the cheapest price I could find was almost 12 000 NZD or about 7 263 USD, and the one professional store (also renting and selling Varicams, CineAltas and the like) is selling it for 13 225 NZD, or 8080 USD. Those prices are with 7.5% VAT, but without P2 cards.

I finally bought a NTSC-Version, as I did not want to pay almost 2000$ _more_ for _not_ having 24p. This is something I don't get, NTSC gets their 30p and 60p, and 24p as a bonus, and PAL gets its 25p and 50p, and _no_ bonus for being _more_ expensive. But hey, a last we get _no_ rebate, so that is a little consolation.

I know, NTSC and PAL are not compatible, but you can convert it, you don't have a resolution advantage anymore, and in HDTV, every unit plays both PAL and NTSC, as there is no more NTSC/PAL. And if not, tell me, and I'll use my HVX as paperweight with clunking sound. And yes, having 24p is important for me, 25p is not good enough.

Hi Pascal - the NZ prices we're kicking around are without our local GST.
So add another 12.5% on top - which brings us pretty much inline with you.

We did away with most import duties a while ago now preferrring to throw our HUGE economy open to the whims of global currency
arbitrage and offer many tax payer owned state assets for sale to foreign investment firms - consequently prices bounce around here a fair bit sometimes.

heh, hope it makes you feel a little better.
cheers

And Alan were you at the course in Wgtn ?
Give me a call sometime if you want.

Yes, I do.

All I wanted was a NTSC/PAL switchable camera. But the PAL HVX can do 23p, and 25p, as the Panasonic labs did not figure out 24p yet.

They did. But didn't want to. So suddenly we got a "cheat" (The scene files frame rate crac"k) that could give us 24p, but with no audio. So we get 24p in Pal, but with no audio, and only in 720p.

Yes, I asked the question "When will the first firmware hack be available?" even before the HVX was out. I think, it' is just a firmware difference, but I read here, that there is some kind of frequency cristall, one able to do NTSC, the other PAL. The Cinealta can do both worlds in one camera, how does Sony accomplish this?

Hi Alan,

A few points to note here. The price adjustment is to bring our pricing back in line with the US list price. When we originally priced this product for the market it was December, and while I can't remember the exact exchange rate at the time we costed the camera to reflect the US list price at that time. We were also pretty bullish about the number of units we brought into the country in the first shipment. We have held off increasing this price until that stock cleared.

As this stock sold through we advised the market via our advertising that the price would be going up and to "get in quick". We started this campaign in April. The actual price increase happened on the 1st of July.

The NZ$2,000.00 increase that you refer to is for the camera with 2 x 8GB cards. The camera price on its own has increased by NZ$1,300.00. You will also note that the Panasonic US list price for the camera is US$5995.00 which based on today's exchange rate (.6027) is NZ$9,946.00, remarkably close to our $9,900.00 list price. If you add in two 8GB cards the US list price is US$8,795.00 which equates to NZ$14,592, remakably close to our NZ$14,500.00.

I should also point out that parallel imported products do not enjoy the benefit that, in the unlikely event of failure :) they will be serviced under warranty by our factory trained engineers. The industry would not be offered training in three centres around the country from Barry Green by parallel importers, the 48 Hours Film Festival cinematography award winner would not be given an AG-HVX200 and P2 cards by parallel importers. Various film festivals around the country would not be loaned projectors by parallel importers. I'll stop there...

Imagine for a moment the reality of a world where the parallel importers eventually drove the large corporates out of the New Zealand market and your professional camera that you use to make a living, had to go back to some unamed country on the other side of the world to be serviced. That is why people buy from Panasonic authorised resellers. I am sure that if you shop around our resellers, you will be able to secure a good deal, you may even find that they have one or two models in stock that they bought at the old price.

In conclusion, we always regret having to put prices up, but we do not control the exchange rate. We held off as long as we could and we gave plenty of warning that this increase was coming. Good luck, I hope that you manage to secure a good deal with a good dealer.
