The Hobbit...

Recently there's been some press about the "The Hobbit", and 48 fps... and It's The End Of The World As We Know It... cue R.E.M...

Anyway, here's a video blog entry with a number of shots of the production of a scene in a 'woods', and Jackson with others describe the process.

Items that caught my interest...

The production uses 48 RED Epics, placed in Stereo systems that allow for better mapping of the 'binocular' process. In particular they use mirrors to get the camera images 'closer' together', and can adjust the distance in 'real' shooting time. So in addition to 'focus pulling' one has 'stereo' pulling.

The use of motion controlled systems for moving the camera assemblies, as well as steadicam and handheld frames to allow for most types of shots used in modern filmmaking.

The use of '3-d' in the story board creation. The artists that were on the LotR doing the still concept art are back, and making red/blue stereo images.

Shooting at 5K resolution.

Makeup, costume, and set design issues in color and saturation, as well as with the 48 fps and high res, more attention to even finer details...

This episode was out sometime in November, but I don't recall it being posted here...

There are others in the 'blog' series, which I think folks should look at, to get a better idea about where 'high end/mega budget' productions are going. Heck, even Scorsese has made a 3-D now...

These blogs are great, thanks for the link.

Dude at 5:13 said the human eye sees 60 frames per second. That's not even close. Anyone who played Quake or Unreal knows that 60fps is the bare minimum you wanted for playing. 120+ was always best.

Man, now I need to go grab a railgun and start fragging.
