The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I never read The Hobbit, but is there enough content to split it into three 2+ hour movies? It just seems like overkill when the book is only 305 pages.

Apparently they are raiding the Lord of the Rings appendixes as well...I don't know, I think most books pack more plot and story detail than could ever fit into a screenplay, which is why many adaptations fail. They try and tell a naturally long story in 120 pages. Some of the best book to movie adaptations were novellas, like Stand by Me and The Shawshank Redemption. While I'm sure financial considerations and pressure from the studio was part of this decision, I think PJ has earned the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, no doubt PJ will pull it off. I just read that he does plan to incorporate the appendixes and a bunch of notes that Tolkien left behind into the story as well so that should be interesting. I guess I should give The Hobbit a read before December. I was just under the assumption that The Hobbit wasn't as in depth or epic as the LOTR series was.

Well no, it's not, but they left out and compressed a lot of the Lord of the Rings. It's actually amazing that they fit it into three movies at all.

I thought they'd do the Hobbit in 2 and have the 3rd film be the "bridge" film that was originally discussed when they were planning on the Hobbit being 1 film. (with the 2nd being the bridge)

But to stretch The Hobbit over 3 films seems torturous. Make it in 2 and make a 3rd film that bridges with the LOTR trilogy with the appendices stuff. But we'll see. I'm glad it is slated for the summer of 2014 and not December 2014.

Jackson has already stated that he will be using the appendices, so I would assume that it will be as you hope.

Given that The Hobbit is only equivalent to 1/3 LOTR (If that) I had my doubts about 2 film in the first place, and am now very worried about 3 films.

Apparently it was PJ's idea after reviewing the footage and deciding there was enough material for a third film, which he then had to sell to the studios rather than being leant on by them to do it.

@NeosSlashX be warned, The Hobbit was written for 7-11 yr olds, and reads like it. Mind you 7-11 yr olds in 1937 probably had a wider vocabulary than they do today (Yeah like innit).

The only way to eke it out to 3 films *would be* to mine the LOTR appendices and notes and fill in the the timeline of what was going on in Middle Earth during the story, and, perhaps what led up to it. There are parts of "The Quest for Erebor" in "Unfinished Tales"

It's sad the Christopher Tolkein has totally taken against PJ and his adaptions to the extent of not watching the films or speaking to the production team. How he can decide he doesn't like the films without seeing them is beyond me, perhaps it's a case of "Don't confuse me with the facts, I've made up my mind", or he just hates film on principle as being "Technology" :-Mad(DBG): Frankly the whole attitude stinks of hypocrisy, since I doubt he (Or JRRT) writes (Wrote) everything in oak-gall ink on parchment with a quill pen and isn't (Wasn't) averse to having the books printed rather than copied by monastic scribes:-Mad(DBG):

From what I've understood, film 1 would be The Hobbit novel. Film 2 would be a bridging film made up of the appendices and Silmarillion or whatever. Now PJ wants to make two films out of film 2 instead of just one so we'll have two bridging films between the Hobbit novel and the LOTR novel.

That's fine with me. What's the problem with that?

That was then. It became two fims of The Hobbit, pretty much divided into going out as part one, then what they did and coming home in part two. Now PJ wants three, and I'm not sure.

As I said, the only way would be to take the Hobbit book as the backbone of the story and hang all the other stuff that was going on in Middle Earth at the same time off it, expanding also on the coming of Smaug 170 years before, something which they may have done, as we've seen hints of Dale before and after Smaug.

I dunno, if he can pull it off well and good, I just hope he knows what he's doing.

Jackson says:

"We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance,"

Well, no; it's been told -- by Tolkein. It's not like these are real people or events.

I've read that Tolkein hates film, not on technological grounds, but artistic snobbery grounds. He thinks the movies and popular culture are 'unutterably low'.

"Don't confuse me with the facts, I've made up my mind"

Shows him to be a biggoted fool.

Everything went down hill with the invention of writing.......

Except the story of The Hobbit will extend to all 3 films. The appendices stuff will be in there as well, but not exclusively in any of the films. I would prefer to see The Hobbit in 2 films with a wholly disconnected "bridge" film about other things make up the third, excepting of course things that make sense to put in the first 2 films, like Gandalf leaving Bilbo and the dwarves and meeting with the White Council. I'd prefer to see The Hobbit story wrapped up in 2 and not spread over 3. To spread it over 3, I would think you're going to see them build some of the smaller skirmishes into gigantic/epic conclusive battles. Like, the wargs and eagles close out film 1. Escape from the Elven kingdom film 2, and finally, the battle of 5 armies for film 3. Or something like that.

The Hobbit will be spread over all 3.

Whew...I remember the ending of The Fellowship of the Ring being a little tough, but doable. The Two Towers' ending felt really really empty. Like, there is this huge story you just abruptly leave without a lot of closure. I know it can't be helped, but I hope these Hobbit films somehow feel cohesive and not a 9-10 hour movie drawn out over 1 1/2 years of releases.

I'm not thrilled with the notion of them stretching the story of The Hobbit over three films, material from the various Middle Earth appendices or not. Two films for The Hobbit seemed okay, if a bit of a stretch, but still doable. Three just seems silly. My first thought was Peter Jackson and WETA could make a couple more Bad Tastes, maybe a Meet the Feebles sequel, and then finance several other independent New Zealand films with the amount of money it will probably take to put together this third Hobbit film.

Oh well, we'll see how it turns out. Hopefully The Hobbit will work and be a fun fantasy/adventure trilogy that is if not as good, at least near the level of quality that The Lord of the Rings film adaptations were.

smart move to make ca$h so people will see all 3 :).I understand original author not liking his baby being modified by someone else, totally normal for me.
