The Guilty 2018

The Guilty 2018 is the Danish entry for best foreign language film for the oscars. It's quite brilliant. It's so good, hollywood is remaking it with Jake Gyllenhaal, because they know a good thing when they see it, and know well enough to steal it :)

If you want to see what can be done with very little - essentially one main guy talking into a phone - and how it flaunts conventional film "wisdom", do yourself a favor and see it. I love it. It's really well made and quite involving. And I just love the fact that it raises a huge middle finger to "good filmmaking rules" - how about the old seemingly fundamental "show, don't tell" with the putdown of "hey, it's film not RADIO". Well, take your "rules" and stick 'em where the sun don't shine :) Everything happens off screen - in your head... that's where the film really takes place. You're building the story completely based on what you hear on the phone and everything essentially is supplied by your imagination. Absolutely brilliant.

Like I always say, over and over and over again: there is only ONE rule in filmmaking - make it involving for the audience. That's it. If you can do it showing nothing but a black screen - more power to you. There are no rules. This film is a brilliant example. Don't let anyone ever tell you how "things are done" or "supposed to be" or "absolute rule".

Burn your film books and go make a movie :) :) :)
