GH3 The GH3: The advances continue!

What if the GH3 was locked and couldn't be hacked? would you still buy it?

With the codec options and a great bitrate stock I probably won't bother to hack my future GH3 unless there are some amazing features unleashed. The good news is that the GH3 will be a great camera out of the box without waiting months to a year for a hack to come around.

I read on personal-view that Driftwood didn't notice any difference in moire between the GH2 and GH3 but is hoping to do more indepth tests.

Same here. As the highest bit rate that I ever used on my GH2 was 66Mbps LongGOP, having 72Mbps Intraframe will be quite nice.

i'd still buy one :) it seems a pretty strong package straight out the box.

it could be a good thing if it's not hackable! :) imagine a world without the endless "hack test" footage out there :)

i feel having no hack to think about we may all just go out and shoot more footage of the things we enjoy shooting.

That is a tough one. On one hand clearly 50mbits will be superior to what most of us are used to out of the box. On the other hand 50mbits is still not perfect and there will still be situations where going higher might be desirable. The 72mbits mode may not be all it is cracked up to be either. That is a bit low for I frame only video and going off past encoding experience and from what others have said the 50mbit mode looks cleaner then the 72mbit mode. I think a good solid 100mbit mode on the GH2 could end up cleaner then the native 50mbit mode on the GH3. Encoding technology can improve but not by that much.

What might make a difference to those who do want higher quality however is the HDMI output. If it is clean but still limited to 4:2:0 that will still equal better quality then what any hack could do. Remember all hacks are still 4:2:0. So a ProRes422 HQ on a Ninja will be better then any hack you could ever dream of. Even limited to 4:2:0.

I will admit however that part of the industry buzz and excitement will be lost if the GH3 cannot be hacked. Part of what made the GH2 so mystical was the amount of tweaks hackers could make under the hood. It really made the camera feel special even if it didn't really do much. People like to tinker with their toys and even if some aspects of the hack create a placebo effect it still made people feel cool. I think a large part of that magic could be lost.

Just because the bitrate is slightly higher doesn't necessarily mean better quality. In fact, in this case it likely doesn't. The higher efficiency of Long GOP allows lower bitrates for the same quality, with an average of 2x increase to get the same quality out of Intra. So in this case you'd need about 130 Mb/s for All-I to get that same quality.

That's
why we hope for a hack.

However one regards the possibilities of hacking, one thing is for sure. The GH3 unhacked is far ahead of the GH2 unhacked. Panny should have learned a few things from the hackers for this upgrade if they were smart about it. By all indications so far they did.

I would rather use the 50 mbps long GOP than 72Mbps Intraframe. There is a good reason why I,B,P compression was invented. That is because it works a whole lot better than Intraframe compression at similar bit rates. Now Intraframe at much higher(ie:170+ mbsec) might or might not be worth it. But at the bit rates we are talking about I don't see how it would be better than the excellent 50 mb/sec mode.

I couldn't have said it better myself. It is kind of like how everyone wants to believe that the 35-100mm F2.8 lens is soft because they don't want to actually have to go out and buy one.

Reality on the internet is pretty much whatever the majority(or a few very vocal enthusiasts) want it to be.

I'm actually very grateful that the things I enjoy shooting look better than they would have without the hack.

i was talking about the GH3 & a possible GH3 hack :) and how if it couldn't be hacked id still buy one as its pretty strong out the box.

Unless Vitaly and company makes it shoot at least 2.5k I don't see much more improvement with a hack. Basically Panasonic implemented the hacks done to the GH2 and more. 50 mbps and 72Mbps Intraframe is good enough for broadcasting. Hacking it higher only adds card speed headaches. The GH3 out of the box is going to be a darn good camera for both stills and video. There is no doubt about that!

well said!

"if it ain't broke don't try fix it" :)

not that i wouldn't like to see it get hacked, its always interesting to see how far things can be pushed. yet it looks a very capable camera straight out the box. also i'm liking the improved handling, build quality and the wi-fi function to name a few.

man, i'm coming back from a 5D... i'm just happy to get the articulated screen!

My thoughts are that the area a 'hack' might improve the camera the most is not in image quality but in freeing up some of the new features like wifi to be used with apps allowing creative control over the camera and its settings. Something similar to a jail break for the iphone to allow 3rd party apps to be used.

The only doubt comes from persons with commercial TVC's waiting for an affordable high speed camera. Sure Phantom Jr is out and FS700 is a cheap 240fps solution in comparison. But really, if someone can give me my S35 sensor in a smaller FS700 form factor for 1/2 the Sony PMW-F55 . I'd be set. Otherwise we have to rent, rent, rent.
Frankly, I'm sick of seeing the saccharine content that we're constantly fed with the consumer MFT's .
