The game is up Sony, time to drop SxS prices

16 Gig (class 6) $40-$80

It is about time these lower cost options arrive. I am looking forward to reading about everyone's experiences. Regarding sourcing of favorably priced SDHC cards, I want to point out that NEWEGG.com has 16 Gig cards (class 6) priced between $40 - $80 USD, with smaller capacities even cheaper. They sell Transcend too.

Hope that helps

The question remains whether any of the 16gb SDHC cards can work reliably, even the Transcend.

As I have been saying, this is purely experimental now and I would not trust any paying gigs.

Very true...
Also, many CLASS 6 SDHC do not work. At least with the AFT 7-in-1 expresscard adapter.
I also ordered the Kensington 33407 7-in-1expresscard adapter to compare against the AFT.

I have the 16GB Extreme III 30MB/S on order, but they are claiming 10-15 days.

:cool:Hey Stevet! Have you tried the i-connect 18 to1 expresscard adaptor from Frys? I have one that I used with my Patriot Class 6 and it was fine in the computer; Copied 1/2hr. of HQ and played it back flawlessly! I still have not upgraded my EX-1 camera as of yet and connot test it for recording. Perhaps if you have a chance you can find out if it works in the camera, It's only $24.99 and returnable. Let me know! -- Carl

I just want to clarify if I am reading correctly (English is my 2nd lenguage) The Transcend 8 Gb express card or the Lexar 8 Gb express card would work with the EX3?

Thank you!

Card Reader alternative

Card Reader alternative

A cheap alternative to the Sony Card reader. Perhaps an HP 2133 with its Express 34 slot would qualify? Small compact and portable, & with XP might be a useful field tool with the clip browser? I don't know how fast it would be but.....

Personally I think the SxS reader is more of a rip off than the SxS cards themselves. While I'm on this, does anyone know a cheap alternative to the official SxS reader( Don't say EX1 and besides, it's not cheap). What is this Kensington 7-in-1 ?[/QUOTE]

Intriguing solution with the Kensington reader and a Transcend card. Now, the interest part would be using a 32 gb Transcend card (around $125 at Newegg.com) with the Kensington device.

Do you have a link to that user's report?

Thanks

I wouldn't suggest buying a 32GB card just in case anything does happen to your card that would be a lot of footage gone. Just buy a few 8gb cards and label them.

Can anyone show me a Kensington reader that will work fine with a Macbook Pro? Also how would I log the footage? Same way as I am doing for SxS? I am gonna order 4 8gbs tomorrow and a card reader.

While the Transcend cards fair well, the SanDisk Ultra III 30MBps cards appear to be the best choice.

"Photokina 2008: Pretec has today introduced the highest capacity and fastest CompactFlash cards in the world. Under the highest capacity come the 64GB and 100GB, 233X CF cards with a read and write speed of 35MB/s. And the 333X CF cards in 32GB and 50 GB capacities have broken the record of the fastest read and write speed with 50 MB/s. Both the cards will start shipping this month." from dpreview.

Soon will come SD cards with same speed.
No more excuse for sony!!

:)I've tested the Trandscend 16Gig against the Patriot 8Gig and found the Transcend is double the speed on the transfer file in the computer.

I didn't order any yet because people keep saying this ones better, or that ones better.

You can use any SD card reader you like, you don't have to use an Express Card reader in the Macbook. Check out the Lexar one here for what is probably one of the better units around. They support SDHC and are cheap and fast.

I used one here to test, see its performance

Note: Of the three tests done it had the fastest sustained read.

SanDisk 16GB Ultra II SD 15MBps Class 4 Lexar Pro USB CF/SD card reader:
Sustained data rate: Read: 17.9MB/s Write: 17.1MB/s
Random 512K file: Read: 17.3MBps Write: 3.1MBps
Random 4K file: Read: 3.9MBps Write: 0.028MB/s

SanDisk 16GB Ultra II SD 15MBps Class 4 Integrated SD card reader Asus laptop:
Sustained data rate: Read: 16.0MB/s Write: 14.9MB/s
Random 512K file: Read: 15.8MBps Write: 3.1MBps
Random 4K file: Read: 5.5MBps Write: 0.030MB/s

SanDisk 16GB Ultra II SD 15MBps Class 4 Sandisk Express Card SD/MS card reader:
Sustained data rate: Read: 17.5MB/s Write: 16.7MB/s
Random 512K file: Read: 16.4MBps Write: 3.0MBps
Random 4K file: Read: 3.2MBps Write: 0.029MB/s

Logging it from the reader would be no different to your current workflow, you'd just point the browser to a different drive letter, or possibly even the same one, depending on your system. Hang on, do macs use drive letters? if not, you'd just point it to the SD cards mount moint. In the end, they are just file on a piece of flash be it SxS or SD.

It will be slower to log in that SxS though, but if that is really important to you then spend 10x-15x the price and buy SxS as that is what it is good for...

Another think I love about SD is how easy it is to connect to my desktop. Sure, SxS is fine on the laptop but on the desktop I need to either spend $250 on the Sony reader or connect my camera up. Now it will just be a standard card reader...

I mean holy cow batman, what just happened here in the last week or two! This changes so much!

PS: Is there any reason to think the Kensington reader won't just work on your macbook anyway?

I hear you there!

It's so slick to just pop the little SDHC card out and throw it into my laptop small reader. It plays flawless with no stutter at all right from the SDHC card.

How does the camera handle switching the SD cards? Do you have to eject the whole card reader before removing/replacing the SD card or can you just eject the SD card, put a new one in and the camera automatically recognises the media and you keep going?

haha, B&H already sold out of this card reader and they only just got stock in. I got my order in so I can only hope it is allocated for me.

lol, got a few dispatch reciepts in email this morning, my two orders of readers have both shipped from different sources same day. Its a race to get here but I bet UPS will beat USPS ;-)

I should have the Kensington one way or the other in a few days at which time I can test the 16GB Ultra II cards. I have no reason to thing they won't work just fine...
