The future of entertainment

I dunno. It's a great theory, but it just feels like another 'big brother' theory. Cameras everywhere.

Sure this theory implies a monetary incentive to it, which means companies will most likely try to go in this direction, but as soon as they start watching you I think people will throw up a bunch of red flags. (then again they already do that with your online use... just it's harder to track and it's a bit sneakier, which is why they get away with it)

I do agree with this 'reality' strive. Even in stories. We see a major push towards the real. Even sci-fi is headed in that direction.

I think what makes it plausible is that they won't neccesarily be cameras. They will be sensors imbedded in our clothes and our gadgets that we will allow because we will be incentivized to do so. Seeing the way my daughter interacts with websites and games just gives me the gut feeling that this is exactly the way things are headed.

True, if it's not cameras, and if it's kept on the down-lo... or as he mentioned you're actually given an incentive to use them (points).

I mean I'm taking a marketing class. One of the main ideas is gathering information, statistics, data, etc. to know your customer. It's the number one most important thing or else you don't know who you're selling to, what they like, how they shop, what they want, etc...

You know what else this reminds me of, Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom and the whole concept of 'whuffie'. In his future, monetary wealth no longer has any meaning because technology has pushed us to the point where all needs are met in abundance. In its absence, people developed 'whuffie', which is like points that you give other people based on how much they've helped you. They become your rep, and your status in society is based on how much whuffie you got.

It's already being done. He might be wrong about the technology and how the sensors get involved, but that's also a very minor point. Look at the underlying ideas; all things that marketers are trying to do right now.

This is called communism. So far, it did not work, but maybe with robots it will.

Communism is about equal distribution of limited resources, which usually makes everyone poor. That's not what Cory's novel was postulating.
