The FS7 will not link audio chanel 1 and 2.

On the EX1 we had the ability to use the side dial to set levels for chanel 1 and use chanel 2 as a backup which would record at 20 percent lower volume. But on the FS7 the two chanels work independently from each other. So you have no way to have chanel 2 follow chanel 1. That seems to be a major step back. If by any chance I overlooked something in the menu, please let me know.

see image below. The Fs7 allows you to set both Ch1 and Ch2 to record input 1. You can set the levels for each channel as you wish using the dials on the side of the camera body.

Yes but I still need to dial level on each channel independenly. I can't just dial one channel and have the other channel record at 20% lower. Also, I don't get the Channel 3 and 4 thing. None of them can record from the XLR inputs. So what's the use?

Channels 3 & 4 are accessible by using the hot shoe on top of the camera. Sony wireless mic systems, such as their 2 channel receiver, mount straight to the hot shoe allowing for up to two additional channels of audio. Works great. You can also purchase Sony's K2M or K1M to gain two additional XLR inputs.

This is the rule, not the exception. Most cameras I have worked with dating back to BetaSP have been this way. It really doesn’t take that much more time to set the second dial a notch or two below the first.
