The Format for Festivals and TV

Hi, I am currently in the field in Indonesia preparing the production of my observational documentary. I would like to get some suggestions about the format.
I am using Af100 and I am interested to use the 720p60. Will this format be good for festivals and TV Broadcast in the next two years when the film is ready for distribution?
Or should it is better to use the 1080i60?

thanks so much in advance!

If it's for a film (that will primarily be distributed in theatres, at festivals, and on Blu-ray), but also shown on TV - use 1080p24.

If it's primarily for televsion broadcast on an HD channel, use 1080i60.

At least that's what I would do.

Barry says that most stations broadcast in 720 X 1280, but in my market they want to start with 1080i. I believe it's better to at least start with a non-interlaced format. For disk or anything that will be shown on a progressive monitor, you might want to shoot 1080 30p. The TV stations in my area demand 1080i but you can always output interlaced... for that matter, you can always go lower resolution from higher. Supposedly though, the codec has the least compression with 720 24 (less frames to make)... I've been happy with what I'm seeing in 1080 30p though. That should give you the flexibility to go wherever you want to go... and I believe it's the cam's sensor native resolution.

I would definitely shoot 1080p at 24 frames - but thats just me… My logic is that I can always 'down convert' later to another flavour if a fest / broadcaster asks, upconverting can be troublesome. Also shooting in the display or delivery format of one particular festival really locks you in; what if you change your mind or they don't accept it?

(projects commissioned by a broadcaster are a different matter all together - we wouldn't be having this discussion because it would all be laid out in the contract)

In your shoes I'd go 1080p with your choice of frame rates (24/25 or 30/50/60)

Dear All,

Thanks for the responds. Those answers help a lot!

Hi HeavyG, I would love to shoot with 24p but I am afraid I would have problems with flicker (Indonesia is PAL). I also might use
GH2 as the B cam. So, is 50i the right frame rate? Is 24/25 more flexible for conversion than 30/50/60?

Thanks

since you are shooting in a country that is 50 cycles, the yes your frame rate should match - so 24 wouldn't work so well.
